Personality

Baiyu fits in well with the other Octavinelle students with his propensity for guilt-tripping and twisted sense of compassion. He prefers to act sweet and timid around others as to not draw too much attention to himself, as well as to make people feel bad if they pick on someone so "weak" and "powerless". Baiyu likes to avoid the spotlight, having the mindset that he can't be forgotten if he is never remembered in the first place. However, this does not apply to people he finds himself attached to; for them, he would do anything to gain their attention.

He's a hopeless romantic at heart. What he wants more than anything in life is to find love, someone he can follow and depend on for the rest of his life. Someone who loves him and accepts him for who he is, someone who won't leave him. Baiyu would go to extreme lengths if it meant not being alone, even if it was detrimental to himself or others. Because of this, he often tries to make himself useful by doing favors for others so they have a reason to keep him around. This rings especially true for whoever he depends on most at any given moment. Following that person gives him a sense of direction. Without that, he feels he has no purpose. That aimlessness leads him to either finding someone new to attach himself to, or losing himself entirely.

Appearance

Baiyu is a youthful, pathetic-looking boy with a fluffy white bob, orange undercolor and a strand falling across his bangs. In his hair, he's almost always seen with ribbons adorning each side of his head, the colors being changed to match his outfits. His large eyes are a golden hue, which accentuate the warmth of his tan skin. Under his left eye, he sports two beauty marks on his cheekbone. Typically, he wears light makeup; neutral eyeshadow and red eyeliner being his go-to look.

In his dorm uniform, his red eyeliner is replaced with the dorm-standard purple. Although he likes the dorm's hat, he often replaces it with his signature ribbons that match the rest of the uniform. The uniform consists of a purple dress shirt, white bowtie, unbuttoned black suit jacket, gray scarf sporting the dorm's logo, and white gloves. But instead of dress pants, he opts for modified shorts and a set of leg warmers that, like his ribbons, match the uniform's colors. His styling of the uniform is a midpoint between Jade and Floyd, not deviating so much as the latter but still making his own modifications.

Skills and Abilities

• Anatomical Knowledge: Baiyu is well versed in the anatomy of various living beings. From sea to land, he knows exactly how to pick them apart or put them back together. This is extremely useful for breaking down different animals for use in the Mostro Lounge kitchen, although this knowledge helps him little when it comes to actually cooking. Over time and with enough guidance, his passion for anatomy can transform into an interest in the magic and science of medicine.
• Acting Skills: As a fan of the arts and member of the film appreciation club, it's natural that Baiyu has some ability to act. He may dislike being in the spotlight, but he's able to adapt to whatever role is required of him. He often utilizes his acting to manipulate others into getting what he wants.
• Determination: Baiyu is an extremely determined individual, especially when it comes to achieving his ultimate goal of finding true love. Almost nothing can stop him when he's truly focused on something, and whatever can stop him, he will find a way around it at all costs.

Signature Spell: Sound of the Sea

Baiyu's unique magic, "Sound of the Sea" (海の歌声, Umi no Utagoe; lit. "Sea's Singing Voice"), allows him to mimic the voice of any voice he has heard. It will copy everything from the vocal range to the timbre. However, to make it as convincing as possible, Baiyu has to study the person's speech mannerisms. Activating it doesn't require much magic. However, the longer he uses it in a single session, the larger toll it will take on his blot accumulation.

Story

Childhood

Baiyu was born to a mer father and a half-mer mother in the Coral Sea off the coast of the Sunshine Lands where his maternal grandparents lived on land. With his mother being half human and her parents living close by on the surface, he frequently took transformation potions to visit them. Because of this, he grew up quite used to the customs on land and spent a lot of time there when he felt like it. He's extremely close to his grandmother, a mermaid who fell in love with a human and chose to live with him on the surface. She often told Baiyu the story of the mermaid princess, how she found true love on land and overcame plentiful hardships in order to have her happily ever after. Inspired by the tale and by his own grandparents' love story, he vowed to himself from a young age that he would follow in their footsteps.

Because of his fascination with the story of the mermaid princess, he began to consume various adaptations of legend, ranging from films to plays to novels. The films and plays in particular piqued his interest, and he began to explore other stories through those mediums. Along the way, he discovered a young actor around the same age as him: Neige Leblanche. Like many things he would come to take an interest in, Baiyu quickly became obsessed; and thus, his interest in acting and beauty was born.

Middle School

In middle school, Baiyu developed a crush on a boy he often saw on the docks when he would swim past. Fortunately for him, Baiyu had caught his eye. It would have been hard for the boy not to; Baiyu's glittering pearl white and orange scales shining in the water, his long fins brushing just under the surface of the water, of course the boy would notice him. Before long, they started to date, always meeting at the same dock. Baiyu was utterly in love. The boy constantly showered him with praise, showing him off at every chance he got. But for some reason, the boy never wanted to meet with him on land, always just where the sand met the sea.

Once, when visiting his grandparents, Baiyu happened upon the boy in public. But instead of grabbing him by the arm and showing him to his friends or telling him how beautiful he looked in his human form, the boy did none of these things. He simply walked away with nothing but a mere passing glance at Baiyu. After that, their relationship was never the same. Often times, Baiyu would wait at the dock until sundown, only for the boy to never show up. And on the days he did show up, he was different; acting coldly and almost bored of him. One day while waiting at the dock, Baiyu saw something that broke his heart: the boy up on the shore with someone else, showing them off and praising them in all the ways he used to do for Baiyu. The boy never came back to the dock again.

After this, Baiyu was never quite the same. Where he was once open and bold, proudly showing himself off and acting naively, he became guarded and withdrawn. He began avoiding the spotlight and hiding his true feelings behind fake tears and exaggerated acts. Baiyu felt easily discarded, like some toy that a child lost interest in. As a result, he started to find ways to make himself as useful as he can; that way if someone tires of his lustre or visual appeal, he would at least still serve a purpose and not be thrown to the side. But deep down, he still longed to be seen and understood, to be wanted for who he truly was and not just for what use he served.
