First meeting
Being part of the Waywards for a very long time, Ares has seen many things. Having to deal with the truth that not everyone could be saved, for quite a while they seemed lost. He kept doing his job, trying to help as many Lanternals as they could
On a stormy day, while traveling with his friends of many years, Waylon, the group noticed how strange the color of the lighthouse's shine was. The turquoise light seemed weaker as the time passed by. It didn't take much time until the Waywards identified a lanternal trapped in there
Their hydrophobia didn't stop Ginkgo's Glow that day. The thought of losing someone again gave Ares the strength needed. The Waywards ended up saving a frail fox-like Lanternal, who could barely speak
Juno:
I was so scared... And weak. I didn't know where I was, who was with me or how long it has been. I just wanted to go home...
Ginkgo's Glow:
I remember how heavy the rain was, and that my flame was weaker as well. It didn't matter! My friends, that woman... I just needed them to be okay
Building trust
The little Lanternal didn't speak for a very long time. She seemed like a scared cat - a very understandable feeling. The mysterious woman was especially scared of Ares. He couldn't understand why. For Juno, it was the familiar yet strange blonde hair and brownish eyes that haunted her dreams
Ares decided not to push her, keeping his distance. He watched her from afar as she rebuilt her home, carefully looking for trinkets and shiny things throughout Flicker Forest. A part of him couldn't keep his eyes away from her, and he didn't really know why
As the time went by, he left some gifts for her by her home. Ares eventually learnt what she liked and disliked, what interested her and what pulled her away. But she never spoke. She never looked at him. He didn't even know her name
Juno:
I-I didn't know if I could trust him! I couldn't speak! He... He looked so much like *him*... And being honest, I was so ashamed with what happened... I thought it was my fault
Ginkgo's Glow:
I didn't really know what to do, but I didn't want her to be alone. Eventually I was able to talk to her, even if she didn't respond to me at first
Autumn's Festival
Slowly the young Lanternal let him in - as well as other members of the Wayward gang. She was, after all, more than grateful for their help. Ares would appear from time to time to chat or show something he aquired during the missions. It'd catch her attention enough for her to write her name on a piece of paper one day: Juno
During one of their conversations, Ginkgo's Glow mentioned a festival that was about to happen. It seemed Juno never took part in it, or at least didn't remember. However, something about the way her eyes lit up made Ares feel optimistic
They were surprised to see Juno in a new gown and makeup, but even astounded to see her approach him to dance. Ares couldn't keep his smile once he heard her say "thank you" for the first time, after their dance
Juno:
It felt magical... And right
Ginkgo's Glow:
Why does everything feel hotter so suddenly? It's normal, right??
Trivia
- Currently Ares and Juno both work with the Waywards. Ares is more like a bodyguard, while Juno takes care of the victims post-rescue
- It'll take them a long time to actually confess their feelings for each other. Juno'll be the first to do it
- Eventually, Juno'll make a little space for Ares and their horses in her house
- Both of them have deity names: Juno's Roman and Ares' Greek
