History: Florence was born an earth pony on the tail end of the Great Wars, her father was declared missing in action, and her mother turned to a bit of a hermit. Her mother moved the two of them to the very edge of territory, and became one of very few families to survive the Final Blast, a simultaneous attack from Sombra and Chrysalis that collided and destroyed most everything, leaving the world desolate. Florence's mother retreated even from her daughter, leaving Florence to care for both of them and the few plants and farm animals that they kept. As years passed, Florence was left alone after her mother passed away. She was heartbroken, of course, but she steeled herself in the knowledge that if she has survived, there must be others. 

Florence continued to live by herself for years, and her diligence in caring for the plants and animals actually earned her her cutiemark. The mark showed a talent of care-taking and nurturing, which caused a sudden inspiration and vision: she could nurture more than just her patch of earth. Thus, Florence devised a plan to leave her home, taking her seeds and skills with her.

Very rarely did Florence return to the shack she and her mother built once she left. Some part of her ached when she saw the past, perhaps. She refused to be discouraged from her future. She gathered a herd of animals and a cart that she pulled no matter the weather, establishing sanctuaries of life in every place she could. The sanctuaries became popular and thrived, even drawing out a few surviving ponies. When ponies saw Florence for the first time, lean and muscular and covered in dirt, but absolutely glowing with hope and determination, they noted that even with the desolation of the Great Wars, Equestria had a future in her. 

Several times she was asked to fill positions of power, but she declined each time, stating that her mission was far from over, and she must continue to travel. When staying in the remnants of Princess Twilight's tree palace one night, she had a vivid dream of encountering the five previous princesses. They commended her for her work, and Luna and Celestia warned her that struggle would come again, and that she must be ready for it. To prepare her, they granted her a gift. When Florence awoke, she found that she had been given wings. Now with the power to travel farther, Florence entrusted the duty of caring for animals in the capable hooves of the ponies she met. She practiced her flight in the ruins of Ponyville, modified her cart, and began a new leg of her journey.

News spread of the gift. Ponies everywhere had opinions about the wings. Princess Twilight had been given wings, did this make Florence a princess? Did her gift mean the princesses could still be alive somewhere? Was Florence doing some kind of trick, manipulating ponies? Florence ignored most questions, instead giving the same answer when she couldn't get away. "I met the princesses in a dream, all five. I believe it was them, I really do. I have no other explanation for how I could have gained wings."
