"The Accidental Disciple of the Owl Deity Strix"

Shiloh works in a library as its guardian and keeper. The library is hidden away, full of ancient tomes, and only certain people can access it. Shiloh never leaves the library, their room is built directly into it.

The Library is Shiloh's charge, it's full of dusty tomes and texts describing long-forgotten rituals and storing information on ancient cultures, and is owned by an Academy with the monetary means to hire guardians for it. Along with their friend Sharkbat, Shiloh is one of two Library guardians and keepers. They don't own the library, but they might as well. They're bound by contract to the place, and even live within it, in one of the back rooms.

They have big hands with sensors on the pawpads. Although they look like wings, they aren't. Shiloh cannot fly. They're an Empath, meaning they can sense intention and emotion, and manipulate it to a certain extent through touch. The sensors on their pawpads and head crest are what allow Shiloh to sense and communicate emotion.

Around others of the same species, the Empathic sensing is the main method of communication. Speech is more of a backup for Shiloh. Their 'mother tongue', so to speak, isn't language based. Instead, Shiloh reads intention through their sensors.

Shiloh is a small, quiet and quirky Kyto who lives in a huge library full of ancient tomes, spellbooks and records. They don't leave the place very often, but it's so full of cozy nooks, interesting stories and things to learn about that Shiloh doesn't really mind.

They can be a loner, preferring to hole themself up in the bookshelves or beneath a windowsill, but not out of spite. Shiloh is a friendly, relaxed individual. They don't dislike people per se, but they need to have their alone time.

Shiloh can be very opinionated, but they do their best to keep an open mind. They were raised by a gravekeeper named Rowan who taught Shiloh to respect and understand other cultures and points of view, which is a teaching Shiloh does their best to obey.

25774902_XJKlnhoVhxxA9bY.pngThey can be very complicated, because their mind is often torn between two opposite directions. On one hand, they can be very flighty and carefree, wanting to let their heart lead them to new adventures. But on the other hand, they're very relaxed and have a comforting sense of home that keeps them grounded in reality. As a result, Shiloh's mind has a tendency to fight with itself, leaving them confused and frustrated with themself.

Shiloh can also be very confident. They believe wholeheartedly in their own abilities, and are able to acknowledge their flaws without seeing them as a burden. They do have a tendency to get overwhelmed, however, because they internalize stress instead of dealing with it immediately. They can project more pride than they have out of fear of revealing their clumsy, flighty, airheaded tendencies. When they retreat into themself to try and find some solace, they can convince themself not to care as a self-protection method... but this has the side effect of making them dodgy, sarcastic and impulsive.

They are a slacker, who spends most of their time sleeping as they are almost always tired. Because they are far away from others of their kind, Shiloh doesn't get the benefit of  Kytogrùan energy sharing capabilities, and instead suffers from an energy deprivation. They enjoy learning about ancient cultures and magic. They can even use magic to a certain extent, although they don't naturally possess magical abilities aside from a natural Empathic ability.

Backstory

Shiloh lived with their tribe, a group of other Kytogrùa, for the first part of their life. They were raised in the cultures and traditions of their own kind, living on a cliff-end where they would leap between the rock faces to get from den to den. Like any other Kytogi, Shiloh was taught to do their best to keep the energies around them positive. They were raised on a non-language-based approach to communication, and depended on the shared energies of others of their kind in order to provide them with the energy they needed.

One night, a storm blew the seas too high for Shiloh, still young and clumsy, to escape, and they were swept away into the sea. Luckily, they drifted ashore nearby, and stumbled around looking for their family. Eventually, their hunger drove them towards the scent of food emanating from a gravekeeper's shack.

The gravekeeper, named Rowan, took them in and attempted to care for them while they were weak and hurt. The two did their best to communicate, but with Shiloh's non-language-based upbringing and Rowan's conditioned language, they had to rely almost completely on miming and bodily cues. Luckily, Shiloh's empathic senses allowed them to understand Rowan's intentions, leading to them trusting the gravekeeper quicker than a normal child would.

Since youth, Shiloh always had a fascination with occult and ancient magic. Strange for a creature without any ties to language, they picked up reading and speaking quickly and easily thanks to Rowan.

While studying, Shiloh picked up an interest in the deity. They eventually started performing rituals of worship despite not being one of Strix' anointed disciples. Shiloh's silhouette, being similar to that of a great horned owl, was enough of a resemblance for the other Disciples to immediately accept Shiloh as one of their own and convince the Deity that Shiloh was already, in fact, a Disciple. An unexpected turn of events, but at the same time a happy accident.

Every time Shiloh performs a ritual of worship, Strix provides them with magic for a set amount of time. Shiloh's relationship to the deity Strix is a fragile one, as they must always appear owl-like before the deity or else be discharged as a disciple, losing their magic and thus their means of guarding the Library.

Trivia
22083206_mIXG4msU7S5XewS.png

- Shiloh frequently falls asleep at their workdesk while reading, so Sharkbat has made a habit of checking their workroom at the same time every day to pick them up and bring them to their bed.

- Shiloh's bedroom is small, cozy and filled with plants, with one large, round window to the outside and many quilted blankets. They wake up at the crack of dawn every morning because they love to sit and watch the sunrise with a cup of coffee.

- They take multiple catnaps throughout the day. Sharkbat will frequently come across them curled up in one of the bookshelves or on a windowsill. He doesn't acknowledge it anymore.

- Their magic is the form of a thick smoky mist that can take any form they desire and even interact with the environment without leaving residue. Since Shiloh's hands are big and clumsy, they use their magic as an extra set of dexterous hands.

- When it's time for Shiloh to renew their magical contract with Strix, their magic weakens. They'll occasionally forget that fact and attempt to use their magic and then be forced to begrudgingly do things manually with their real hands.

Sharkbat

[ Close Friend ] Shiloh and Sharkbat are stupidly close, enough for Shiloh to be able to hug Shark without getting a smack in the face. They've been partners and friends since Shiloh showed up at the Library and turned Shark's pleasant, quiet life into one of chaos filled with tiny humunculi. Shark is sort of a big brother figure to Shiloh, nagging them as often as he shoos them out of his room for being annoying. But he'd also defend them until the death, and Shiloh would do their best to return the favor.
