Northern Lights is a unicorn with a mellow, down-to-earth personality and a practitioner of holistics and crystal healing. She studies the effects of gems and crystals on health and believes they hold a powerful energy, using them to treat ponies with sicknesses or bad moods. She lives with her younger brother Silver Lining.

Her best friend Magma Flow, who is a geologist, often expresses skepticism whether gems can heal ponies or contain "energies" of any kind, but Northern Lights holds strong to her beliefs and will often go on geology trips with her to harvest new crystals, which she can locate with a special spell. 

Northern Lights is also a painter, taking inspiration from the night sky and celestial bodies to create psychedelic works of art. Numerous paintings of hers even feature Luna and Celestia in groovy kaleidoscopic depictions, and it's her dream to someday show or perhaps even gift one of these painting to the princesses themselves.
