About

Santiago is an artist (and less frequently, a poet) who gives the impression of something ancient and not fully "knowable"; always at arms' length, but with an insightful and sensitive energy. However, it's this softspoken allure that "traps" people: this is not a kind, sensitive man with high empathy, and no matter what, he is a vampire and humans are livestock-- and like any other living creature, he must eat.

Humans of the nearby realm are warned to be aware of the dangers, and yet when they are unfortunate enough to meet him, they are surprised to find that Santiago is not the ravening, bloodthirsty beast the stories like to portray him as. Many are tricked into entering his grand castle to take shelter for the evening, only to be tortured with horrific and traumatizing hallucinations that almost always lead to madness. Santiago finds that people are most beautiful in a state of frenzied anguish, and this is what inspires his art.

Their blood is then consumed, and he harvests their souls to paint with; his works have a terrible vibe of dread and are haunted in a literal sense, with eyes that follow the viewer, expressions that briefly distort, or the faint sound of crying when the viewer is fully alone.

Santiago is astonishingly cruel in a very specific sort of way, and one should hope they never cross paths.

                            LIKES

Floral scents, disturbing art, beautiful red-haired men, sad madrigals but also bawdy drinking songs, anything gold and draping

  •                        DISLIKES
The entire Velarde family, silver jewelry, very hot weather, loud dogs

Snippets

  • He was 34 when he "awakened" as a vampire. Prior to this, he had hazel eyes.
  • He's an Archblood, meaning that not only is he a born vampire, but he's the direct descendant of one of the Five Great Houses (House de la Torre).
  • His Nightrealm is known as the Highvales, and it bridges Meravasque and D'artau. It's the only land-based way to travel from one region to another, but most know better than to enter his territory (at least without prior notification and a sustenance offering, of course).
  • Both of his parents were killed by the Velarde family, which effectively put them on the map centuries ago as competent hunters.
  • Santiago's ability to use illusion magic comes from his mother; her side of the family developed it, and she taught him.
  • OOCly,  he has several inspirations: Carmilla (Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust),  Hermes (Final Fantasy XIV), real-life artist Dante Gabriel Rossetti...  and to a very small extent, Nadja from What We Do In The Shadows (lmao).
  • His castle is said to have a persistent floral smell, but ever so slightly "off" as if strong perfume is being used to mask something.
  • His first love was a human man named Tomas. Tomas was turned by him, only to be slain by Leonor Velarde. Santiago is currently fixated on a human named Dominique, who greatly resembles Tomas to the point where he believes Dominique is Tomas reincarnated.
  • He still has Tomas' severed head. As Tomas was turned before death, it's perfectly preserved and will never rot. Santiago has full-on conversations with it and carries it with him if he goes anywhere of notable distance.
  • He was named after a song by Loreena McKennitt— not the minor character from the Anne Rice novels, as some believe!
