When a person dies, that's it. The last thing they'll ever do is fall into that endless sleep. That's why I work so hard to make sure the graves I care for are perfect. So their final rest is peaceful.

― Tokiko Goto

Tokiko Goto (五藤 時子 Gotō Tokiko) is a student in Hope's Peak Academy. Her title is the Ultimate Gravedigger (超高校級の「墓掘り」chō kōkō kyū no “hakahori” lit. Super High School Level Grave Digger).

Appearance

Tokiko is often credited for looking older than for her actual age of 17, despite her average height and slender figure. Her hair is medium-brown and short, often styled in a manner which is messy yet still managable and not overly displeasing. Her skin tone is pale, often resulting in her yellow eyes standing out from her appearance.

Her most typical outfit tends to consist of short-sleeved dark grey t-shirt worn over the top of a longer-sleeved black shirt with finger holes, along with long dark-red jeans, somewhat similar in shade to burgundy. For footwear she wears dark ankle-high boots which are laced. In addition to this, she accessories with a simple black collar, and a black backpack with gold-like buckling and zippers. More often than not, she opts to wear a black surgical-like mask as well.

Personality

Tokiko is reserved when it comes to expressing or showing her emotions, not wishing for them to get in the way of matters going on around her. As such, it can often be hard to get a good read on what she’s really feeling or thinking in a situation due to the calm exterior she insists upon. While this may mean that she’s unlikely to air any emotional distress she’s going through, it won’t stop her from speaking out about situations which not only affect her but others as well.

She’s far from being a social butterfly, typically preferring quiet environments over being involved with busy engagements. This extends to her choice in company as well, with her often not being a fan of individuals who are too loud, disrespectful or obnoxious for her own liking and taste. Even if she does express dislike for an individual however, she does at least maintain a neutral and polite tone with them and any other individuals she may take to due to her preferring to be more mediatory. Often she can be observed watching from the outside of conversations, observing what others say before deciding whether or not to add her own contributions to a discussion.

When it comes to the prospect of her own talent, she is often hesitant to bring it up due to the previous experience and negative backlash she’s received in her life because of it. Regardless what other people might think about her or her talent however, she treats her work with the highest level of honor and care. Hearing other people disrespect the work she does or the dead greatly irritates Tokiko due to how passionate she is about what she does and because she believes it’s personally wrong to speak ill of the dead after their passing. While she is somewhat desensitised to the prospect of people dying, she still cares and mourns for the people she’s involved with.

With her talent being one closely related to the dead she often takes interest in things connected to the dead and the occult, mainly due to the desire to use the information she gains to improve the potential service she may provide to individuals.

Talent

Tokiko was raised in a family where grave digging and careers involving the deceased was normal, having been a tradition and business passed down for generations through the family. As such, she found herself involved in the same practices her parents involved themselves in, despite being so young.

With her having grown up around the family business and the dead, passing on the family tradition seems natural to her and so she followed it the main way she could - By gravedigging. Despite how simple the profession may seem, Tokiko made the utmost attention to detail when preparing graves - From making sure it was the perfect depth, to making sure the enviroment and the ground itself was perfect for it's soon to be inhabitant.

Being judged for her involvement with the dead was a norm for her growing up, and often resulted in her being the target for bullies due to how low class her profession was and how strange she was for wanting to be involved with dead people. The more she was bullied for following the career she did, the more she withdrew to it with the idology that dead people couldn't treat her the way living people did.
