Roy grew up in Chicago. At college he studied sociology and philosophy, with a focus on ethics. That was also where he met and befriended fellow philosophy student Ray. After he graduated, Roy stayed in academia and wrote some half-decent essays, but mostly had no idea what to do with his life until one day it dawned on him: He should make video essays. This decision obviously came completely independent of the fact that Ray was also making video essays, which Roy had occasionally helped him with.

He and Ray co-created a successful series where they debunked various pieces of currently prevalent misinformation, with a humorous tone. The main appeal was the banter between the two hosts, but as it turned out, Roy was also pretty good at making entertaining videos on his own. He's only gotten more and more popular over the years, to the point where his fanbase has gotten a bit intense. Much of Roy's popularity comes from his strange personality. Everyone thinks it's just a persona for his videos, but that isn't the case. His eccentricity is charming to some, but it also causes him problems in his day-to-day life, which he doesn't want to acknowledge. Despite these issues, Roy can be very funny and endearing, and he tries to do the right thing both in his personal life and in his work.
