He gradually became increasingly demonized- and demonic- the more he sacrificed for the sake of saving his world
He tried to remain honorable and just but extenuating circumstances constantly challenged those ideals, so he gradually stooped to more deplorable methods until the people he meant to save and defend could only remember him as a villain
History was twisted because he did good things but the reasons and context are often lost in translation, so he is depicted as having both a halo and demonic horns
His charisma has been perverted into cunning manipulativeness, and his selfless acts into nonsensical whims
Great feats are attributed to the aid of some great demon that he must have been beholden to...

And so he rages against the world even in its current age, and all that his people forgot and twisted. He demands all of his pain and hollow efforts be paid back in blood
His spirit could not pass on because he could not find peace even in death, and so it has been warped into this 'tulpa'. A divine deviant of world-bending power and the very malefactor that his people paint him as
He seeks to destroy the world as they know it so that he can finally play his part 'properly'
