Born to her mother, SpeckleTrail and an unknown kittypet father, Otterkit didn't exactly fit in within Shadowclan. To add on to that, Otterkit received an ear infection, which resulted in acute hearing loss. As a result, Speckletrail created a scuffed 'cat sign-language' to communicate with Otterfreckle during these events of sudden deafness. As an apprentice, Otterpaw was first apprenticed to MouseRiver, the medicine cat at the time. This didn't exactly work out for Otterpaw, and subsequently, he was apprenticed as a regular Shadowclan warrior. After six moons of training, Otterpaw received her warrior name, Otterfreckle.

While on a hunting patrol one day, Otterfreckle came across an injured and abandoned loner kit. Immediately, she took this kit in, and placed herself in the nursery as a queen while the kit was younger than six moons. This kit, who he named Heronkit, turned out to have congenital hearing loss. Remembering the scuffed sign language her mother had taught her, Otterfreckle elaborated on the communication, and established a sign-language commonly used by the clans to today. Otterfreckle is often brought to most gatherings to teach the other medicine cats and leaders this language, which is mostly communicated through the movement of the paws, tail, and ears.

As of today, Otterfreckle is the mentor to Heronpaw, and Butterflypaw. He still resides in Shadowclan to this day, and is 42 moons.
