Bups is an Octoling that was formerly a soldier down below. She had an abuisve ‘mother’, (basically the woman assigned to her troop) who acted this way mainly due to Bups’ rebellious nature.
She escaped on a mission where she was supposed to be capturing an Inkling for underground research, trying to learn more to know the weaknesses, however Bups had never been on a mission before that required hurting someone else that wasn’t more than just a scratch, and she knew the horrors of Octo Canyon, so her kidnapping was incredibly pathetic. The attempt was made on an Inkling named Tax, who was less freaked out because of how sheep-like Bups seemed, the reluctance in the Octoling clear.
It doesn’t take long for them to form a bond, Tax agreeing on letting her stay with her and her friends, and this relationship eventually warps into more than just friends.
