Sunbitternstar is a valiant, but naive, cat. His idealism can both leave him open for criticism as well as make a strong case for his leadership. He is altruistic, perhaps to a fault – he wants to turn around GroveClan’s historic closed off nature by any means necessary. Sunbitternstar would sooner go hungry himself then turn away a hungry mouth from his Clan. He is extremely resourceful and creative, especially in his hunting styles; in times of low prey, he sticks to his adage of “work smarter, not harder”. Often he is quick to test new hunting techniques, hoping to put his skill to use in making life in GroveClan even slightly easier.
Often he confuses overcautiousness for patience. Sunbitternstar wants nothing but to see the best in others, and will give even his enemies plenty of chances for diplomacy before he truly acts. He wants so desperately to see conflicts solved without bloodshed that he will sooner concede territory for peace than launch a counteroffensive. Thus, he can be quite slow to act. He sees older warriors as cynical for being so quick to turn away from others, and he rejects this pessimism, even to his own detriment. Empty promises alongside kind words are a siren song to Sunbitternstar: as much as he doesn’t believe it, he is easily swayed by those who speak to his ideals, even when their words ring hollow.
Sunbitternstar may have lofty goals, but he can be a bit absentminded. He can be quite introverted, and often slips away from camp unnoticed to spend time alone in the marshes of GroveClan. He can often be found at shorelines, either fishing or simply gazing out at the sea. He is very easy to get along with, but hard to get close to; most often, he surrounds himself only with cats who align with his worldview. His loyalty is hard to shake, no matter the circumstances.
Since his plucky nature and intelligence has gotten him this far, he is not quick to accept criticism. Most often Sunbitternstar’s arrogance causes him to dig his heels in when faced with opposing ideas, which he rejects as cynical or traditionalist. He does not want to see the worst in those around him, under any circumstances: he wants to believe in the good of everyone, and he wants words to prevail over claws, always.

03 — Background
As An Apprentice...
Sunbitternstar was born to a respected hunting pair, Heronwhistle and Cranedance, alongside his sibling, Kagutuft. He was born at an especially stable time for GroveClan environmentally, and did not experience much camp movement in his youth. His early life was relatively calm, both due to lighter weather and the less strained relationship between GroveClan and BrineClan at the time.
Apprenticed to the warrior Anhingastrike, Sunbitternstar quickly showed promise in his hunting skills, much like his parents. His creativity helped him excel even in difficult hunting grounds. Hunting was clearly what he preferred, compared to fighting or border enforcement; he rarely voluntarily joined border patrols. Sunbitternstar was far from a poor fighter though, even if he preferred to avoid combat. While he was prone to wandering off and fishing by himself even as an apprentice, he was generally seen as dutiful as he always brought back any food he caught. Compared to his sibling, Sunbitternstar was the more stand out of the two.
As A Warrior...
As a warrior, Sunbitternstar was given the name Sunbitternwing. He had the reputation for altruism, always passing up his meal if food stores were running low, and brainstorming new hunting techniques for hunts to make up for lower prey populations. While he was respected, it wasn’t uncommon for others to think of him as having his head in the clouds. Though friendly with his Clan overall, Sunbitternstar still spent much time alone, fishing along the shores of the marsh or the bay.
It was his creativity and idealism that caught the eye of Crocodilestar. Crocodilestar guided GroveClan with a strong hand, never one to back down from aggression but never one to start conflict, either. After the previous deputy was killed, Sunbitternstar was chosen to be deputy; Crocodilestar acted as another mentor for Sunbitternstar, to guide him more towards pragmatism so he could be an effective leader. However, Crocodilestar was killed in a flood a few moons after Sunbitternstar was named deputy.
As A Leader...
As a young leader, Sunbitternstar has lofty goals, wanting to usher in a softer culture for GroveClan. His plan to deal with BrineClan’s growing hostility is purely through diplomacy. He can be quite stubborn against opposition to his idealism, certain that his vision for the future is the correct one.
04 — Trivia

Design is based off a sunbittern (Eurypyga helias). His enjoyment of fishing is based off the observed practice of sunbitterns using bait to "fish".

Parents are named after birds the sunbittern was originally thought to be related to (Herons and cranes), and sibling is named after a bird actually related to sunbitterns (kagus).

His mentor was named after another fishing bird, the anhinga. Anhingas sometimes nest in colonies with herons as well.

His previous leader is named after a crocodile (previous name being Crocodilesnap), as crocodiles are closely related to birds.
