grew up in mondstadt with his mother and father. he and his mother were very close, with him being her only child, and she was his hero. when he was 12 he went out exploring by himself and got caught in a rockslide, severely injuring him and blinding him in his right eye. during his recovery period, his mother went missing in the middle of the night for unknown reasons, and all traces pointed to the fatui. ilse grew disdainful towards the fatui, and due to his mother not being there to help with the arguments between ilse and his father, the relationship ilse had with his father decayed dramatically. 

years later, when he was 15, ilse finally built up the courage to run away to try and find his mother for himself, since he felt unsafe living with his father and all he wanted was his mom back. he ended up traveling for days and succumbing to exhaustion one night, passing out near liyue harbor. when he woke up, a dendro vision laid floating in front of him

ilse is fairly shy and reserved, but he’s also friendly and will try and help whoever he can. he finds it hard to trust people, and lyney tends to be the only person he feels like he can truly open up around. he dislikes fighting but will do so if it’s to protect the ones he loves.
