Personality n stuff:  Caleb is fairly intelligent for his age and became a science enthusiast very early on as a child. He usually acts more mature than expected, but isolates himself from others both out of disdain and embarrassment (and fear). 

Other: 

Caleb's intellect enabled him to enter university early on at the age of 17. Highly interested in physics and the idea of a multiverse (or alternate dimensions) he spent most of his time researching and developing ways to detect these alternative dimensions. Due to scrutiny from his colleagues he kept his interests and discoveries to himself until he could prove himself without room for doubt. 

He theorized a way to create a window to view into a parallel universe in secrecy. To accomplish this he built a machine that would tear a small hole in space. He built this machine in one of the unused laboratories at his university. During his first experiment, due to his machine, space and time became erratic causing the machine to explode with him next to it. The explosion destroyed the lab and machine, and he was hospitalized for several months.

Several weeks after being discharged from the hospital he began to have strange experiences. Such as the inaccurate reflections of mirrors or impossible shadows, and other glimpses of unusual otherworldly things. Sometimes he would see events occurring in a location that were not really happening. He thought he was hallucinating at first. Eventually he convinced himself these events were real and began to study these occurrences.

He discovered he could manipulate a small pocket of space and even travel to other dimensions, it was energy draining and sometimes (although rarely) brought him dangerously close to death. After a long while he noticed a dark slime accumulated whenever he travelled between universes to study them. He stopped travelling between dimensions for a short while to try and get rid of this substance but the substance would (begin) continue to appear wherever he was despite not travelling to other worlds.

One night (around the age of 19) as he lay in his bed, the dark substance had begun to "drown" him from inside his body.  He was sucked into another dimension against his will during this event, when the substance dissipated. He managed to travel back and tried to find ways to stop this from happening with no success, the only way he could stop it was to travel to another dimension during the event (where he would be stuck for days due to his energy being depleted). He occasionally may be 'dragged' to another dimension against his will. He still continues to study this substance while also finishing university.
