Growing up, Coburn was raised in a family of Knights, being known by the kingdom for often having a member of family become personal guards to the royal family, or becoming the head of knightages and protecting their kingdom.
Coburn himself was positioned as Francis' personal knight, even before the revolution.
Unfortunately, his father was at the time, the tyrant kings personal knight as well. Despite knowing the horrible things the king was doing and how he felt about the citizens, his father still stayed in that role to the end of the revolution, finally snapping and betraying the tyrant when the king was trying to order him to kill innocent maids and staff members; and use them as sort of "meat shields" to slow down the revolutionists so he could escape.

Coburn is now the head of defense in addition to still being Francis' personal guard. He works with Francis to protect the kingdom, now that roughly 80% of it is above land again and exposed to the monstrous creatures in the waters.
