Project Cassus, a secret endeavor of Verstael's, to harness a mysterious power in the form of a special Magitek Core.

When Mithos Yggdrasil's cruxis crystal was shattered by Lloyd Irving, a fragment was left behind, imbued with a surviving shrapnel of Mithos -- a shrapnel containing Mithos' hate, rage, and desire to turn the living into lifeless Angels. A great power still resided in this fragment, and even some small measure of flickering consciousness -- a flickering consciousness that would have winked out of existence, if by some quirk of fate, the fragment ended up in Verstael's hands.

Knowing mostly that it was the remnant of a powerful being, Verstael refined the broken jewel into a Magitek Core, and fitted it into the heart of one of the countless starscourge-infected clones he'd made of himself.

Anyway, that's Cassus! He's a white mage/lancer instead of a time mage/lancer, and he carries a horrifying variant of the starscourge Cassus has coined the 'Heavenscourge,' born of Mithos' angelic power combined with the foul corruption of the starscourge.

 A wraith-like remnant of Mithos haunts Cassus constantly, egging him on into spreading the Heavenscourge. Cassus mostly does this by leaving behind glowing red feathers, plucked from his own wings (he can hide these at will, so it's not like he can't control leaving feathers behind).
