"Mommy?"
God. It hurt so much. It hurt so much, he may have been better off dead.
It was a crisp autumn morning in 1998. Dameon was just a lively five-year-old ready to go to school.
Everything was packed and ready for kindergarten. His backpack, his rubber bracelets, his pencils, crayons, his comfort generation two My-Little-Pony figure, and his mom to help walk him over to school.
He was excited to go. So excited, that when his mother, Victoria, unclasped his hand for a brief moment to check the time, he had run off ahead of her. Victoria had called him back with worry, but then playfully, as she knew he was slowing to cross the crosswalk.
Dameon remembered what she told him. Look both ways. Victoria could trust him enough, and she was coming from behind.
The driver was going 96 miles per hour.
