The Moss Darkky was born of legends and fairy tales 

("legend has it that the moss grows on the north side of the tree...")

and is actually a nightmare despite not being at all malicious in appearance or personality. The reason for this is because they unintentionally distort their surroundings to figments or over-glorified versions of the real surroundings, which usually doesn't result in the best possible outcomes.
