Profile
MELINA
Overview
Melina Eleni Hagelin is a patron in the Caesar Organisation's Eleos unit, on loan to their Demeter unit as a in-house medic and trauma nurse. A quick thinking and headstrong woman, she is excellent in the times of crisis and her practicality makes her a good fit for the unit. She has little to no combat training, however, which is why she is in-house instead of on-field.
She found her place in Demeter very quickly and considers them her second family, spending more time with them than with other Eleos patrons. Melina cares for each of them deeply despite how seemingly tough and no-nonsense she is on them - she will still chastise them and prod wounds if they come to her with something stupid and/or avoidable. When she is not under the pressure of work, she is a bright & sociable presence who's easy to talk to and down to do whatever.
At least there’s one person around here who can listen to instructions. She has yet to disappoint me, and between me and you, I hope she never does. This one is going places.

Demeanor
When Melina is deep in thought or focusing hard on a job, she has a habit of biting/ chewing on the inside of her cheek or her lips; it tends to get on her nerves and she always realises too late when she's doing it. She tends to hum while she thinks too, especially if she's in conversation with someone; she's a very animated/ expressionistic conversationalist.
In terms of her physical demeanour, she is firm and assertive with a warm, compassionate streak; a caring core beneath required professionalism. She stands tall and has good posture, something working in both Eleos and Demeter has taught & although you'll find her most likely with her arms crossed, she has a kind smile and glint in her eyes.
Melina speaks with a lilt and there's a lot of intonation in her speech, but her tone can quickly change to something more resolute and unimpressed if need be. She is quick to change how she communicates depending on the mood of the conversation or who she's talking to. Overall she is very easy to approach and talk to - particularly in her spare time! If you catch her on break or on days off she's very chatty and inviting.
Melina shows her affection mainly through physical touch and quality time; she likes to be close to whoever she's spending time with (if they have that sort of relationship) whether that be sitting close, legs touching, arms linked etc. . She gets a lot out of doing things with those she values too, even the simple things like laundry or having lunch together - it doesn't need to be something big & proper for her to consider it meaningful!

Design notes
- Melina has a mole under her left eye, a slightly hooked Greek nose, long eyelashes & dimples that show up when she reeeeeaally smiles.
- Her hair is dyed but as it grows quickly and she doesn't have a lot of time to redye it often, her roots show through
- She keeps her hair in a sort of half-up-half-down style 99% of the time, fully keeping it back with a claw clip when working or treating someone
- She is physically fit but doesn't appear muscular; her body shape is pear-ish/ hourglass-y
- She's seen mostly wearing scrubs or spare Demeter kit that she's 'borrowed'

Childhood
- Born to a poor family
- Hit with a tragedy that altered her life's course
- Taken under the Caesar Organisation's wing
Melina was born as the youngest and only daughter in her family who lived in one of the rougher areas of X28. She spent her childhood fairly averagely, naive to the worst parts of the city's underbelly thanks to the protection of her parents. Her father was a police officer for their district and someone she admired greatly. Laurin lived practically next door to her and the two became fast friends, particularly after Laurin came out and found his household was no longer someplace welcoming to him. Melina (and her family) were more than willing to take Laurin under their roof and their bond only grew stronger. Unfortunately, her uneventful childhood was cut short thanks to complications arising from her father's work.
One day during her teenage years, her home was broken into & family attacked (Melina is yet to learn why, left only with suspicions of the cause); she was lucky enough to leave with no lasting injuries. In a sheer panic and unsure whether her family members had also survived, she frantically tried anything & everything in an attempt to provide some sort of aid. Members of the Caesar Organisation's Demter unit showed up soon after on scene and took over from a terrified, adrenaline fuelled Melina. With nowhere and no one else to turn to, she pleaded with Demeter to get her away and provide her protection to which they pointed towards the organisation. Seeing no other option, she applied and fought to be accepted. Melina then had her identity completely erased and found herself with a new one - Mera. She trained hard to fit the position of a trauma nurse to save people - the one thing she couldn't do back then. To this day, she has no idea about the fate of her parents or her brothers, and still hopes she'll see them again one day despite how unrealistic her wish is.
PRESENT DAY
- Joined the Eleos unit before being loaned out to Demeter
- Reunites with Laurin and finds her place in Demeter
- Works hard to pay back what the org has done for her
After completing all of her studying and training, Melina gained her qualification to work as an in-house medic - specifically as a trauma nurse. Her skills were more suited for and needed in Demeter so she was swiftly loaned out to work with them. She met Daphne & Odette and under their supervision became a useful pair of hands amongst the constant high pressure demand of Demeter's many patrons. Melina works tirelessly as she feels incredibly indebted the org (Demeter specifically), and although she is currently thriving under its care, she can't escape the bitter taste of knowing this is it for her. She's settled in well socially too, Demeter becoming a second family to her and a group of people she cares deeply about - even if some of them are pretty rubbish patients.
After being suddenly separated all those years ago, she has reunited with Laurin now that the two of them have ended up working in Eleos, albeit in separate spaces. The two of them are even closer than before, despite seeing each other less, and make as much time as possible to meet up. She's incredibly glad to at least have him - a reminder of her past life - here with her.

Skills & abilities
WOUND DRESSING
As Melina's most commonly used skill, she is adept at dressing all kinds of wounds with speed and precision. She makes sure to remain aware of how her patient is feeling though, and does her best to make her dressing applications as painless as possible.
TRIAGING
As a medic for Demeter, situations with a large number of patients/ casualties with varying degrees of injury are fairly regular. This means Melina has had to learn how to efficiently triage patients in order to get everyone treated and minimise damage.
SURGERY
Surgery is something that takes years of training and practice to perfect; it is definitely not Melina's strong point. Usually it gets left to more senior, experienced Eleos patrons, or those who specialise in surgery, but if there is a dire need for basic surgery then Melina could potentially step in. She's generally an assistant when it comes to surgery.
Due to his recent injury, Melina has seen a lot of Chuck and it's spawned an unlikely, but very strong, bond. His warmth & chivalrous protection has Melina viewing him as something of an older brother or family figure. She is more than happy to listen to all of his stories and anecdotes during his visits to the medical bay, even if she struggles to find words amongst his thick southern drawl.
She's very grateful for the comfort and company Chuck provides and has found herself getting used to all of his quirks - things she now thinks are endearing. It's patrons like him who make her time in the org bearable
Daphne is a senior Eleos patron and a supervisor to Melina during her time with Demeter. Despite their glaring external mismatch, the two of them get along well; Daphne is someone Melina really admires. He was one of the people who first helped her get into the rhythm of Demeter and she's forever grateful for it.
Even though there's only an age gap of 7 years, Melina sees Daphne as kind of a father figure - something she'd never admit. She's eager to please and any praise that comes from him makes her whole week. She's also started to develop a resistance to his awful jokes.
Birdie is the younger sister Melina never had; she considers her to be her closest friend aside from Laurin. Being some of the very few women within Demeter, she was quick to befriend Birdie and since then their relationship has only gotten stronger.
Although she can be quite a force, Melina can appreciate it's necessary considering who she has to work with, and she's always willing to listen to Birdie let off steam about their colleagues in their breaks or during time off. Melina looks out for her whenever & wherever she can.
Hero is a frequenter of the Demeter medical bay - particularly Melina's station - so the two of them see each other fairly often. Usually he comes by for something minor that's really a cover for rambling about his day, or a recent mission, or how heartbroken he is that his best friend fancies his sister. Melina tends to scold him and says it's annoying but she can't deny the disappointment she feels when he doesn't pop by.
She enjoys listening to his stories and can't help but notice little things like how nice his smile is, or how pretty his eyelashes are, or how he doesn't just talk at her but ask about how she's doing too. It's hard to be down when he comes to visit.
