Haruka Tanaka

Haruka Tanaka is a fan character for Kubo and the Two Strings that I've had for a couple years now... 

His story takes place a few years post movie.

A lot of the art you'll see me post here is either drawn by me or my partner (transjiimhawkins on tumblr). I'll see if I can post the commissions I've gotten of him, once I receive permission.

Haruka is an obedient and humble boy whose adoptive parents took him in as a newborn from his widowed father, a farmhand of theirs, when he pleaded with them on account of he wasn’t prepared to care for a child without his wife by his side. He is not favored by his given father and has faced a strict upbringing, but has kept a good heart through the nurturing of the farmhands, including his birth father, who keeps his relation to Haruka a secret (Haruka believes his adoptive parents are his real parents).

He has a gnarly scar/tissue damage on his left leg from an accident when he was around 11 and uses a cane sometimes, until another injury due to his leg when he’s in his twenties makes it necessary to use at all times.

Haruka longs for a life beyond his responsibilities on the farm and the abuse from his father and neglect from his mother, and often dreams of the sea. He is kept going by the love of his younger sisters and his desire to keep them safe.

On his 15th birthday, he’s allowed a special visit to the village and it’s there he meets Kubo when they’re both in their mid-teens. He watches Kubo’s show with dazzlement, Kubo spots his unfamiliar face in the crowd, and a story begins…
