I'm prepared to take that burden.

About

A tiefling paladin and folk hero, a devout follower of Ilmater. Virgil is known amongst the people of Baldur's Gate as a travelling knight in shining armour.

Personality

His personality is most comparable to a large, friendly hound who's prepared to protect someone no matter what cost. He comes off as intimidating at first glance, but he has a kind heart. He's not the smartest but always has the best intentions.

He explicitly doesn't want to be associated with anyone who brags about being a ''hero'' as he thinks most of them only do good deeds for selfish reasons.

Design notes

  • he has red eye bags.
  • his hair is a gradient from pure black to pure white.
  • He has a large, x-shaped scar on his back.

Backstory

Pre game story

Virgil grew up in a small village mostly inhibited by other tiefling. With a mother who had a big part in tending to the village farm, a father who was a carpenter and two older siblings. Thanks to the village being welcoming and very devout Ilmater worshippers, it was a popular location for travellers to rest. He was taught the values of kindness and taking on others' burdens from a very young age and never stopped taking that to heart.

One of his fondest childhood memories was striking up a conversation with a traveller: a drow with stark, white hair, clad in shining armour. He told the young tiefling about his adventures and how many souls he'd saved. The traveller even gave him his first couple of self-defence lessons before he had to move on with his journey. He impressed him so much that he inspired him to also become a paladin one day.

At the age of 14, his peaceful life came to an end as his village was raided and destroyed by a band of thieves who ambushed them during the night. The only thing that was left of the village in the morning was destroyed homes and very few survivors. Virgil was the only one of his family to survive. from that day onward, he followed his passion. He became a travelling paladin, drifting from town to city and helping those in need whenever he could.

He eventually tracked down the group that raided his village and took them down, but he gained no satisfaction from it. It caused him to reconsider his oath of vengeance and pursue an oath of protection instead.

However, he always kept finding his way back to the city of Baldur's Gate. It led him to be known amongst its people. The tiefling knight who rode a black steed and stood up for those in need, an intimidating site for those who didn't know his true character.

One of these stays in the city led him to be abducted by the mindflayer ship.

Post game story

After falling hopelessly in love with Astarion during their quest the two vow to travel together, both to make Faerûn a better place and to find a way to allow the pale elf to walk in the sun again. After long days of studying and keeping watch over Buldur's gate by night, the two of them set off to find the artefact they need: The ring of the sunwalker. Which Virgil intends to propose to his lover with.

throughout the years following their adventures, the two of them become a living folk legend. Two eternal lovers who once saved the city and now stand for justice.

Aeterna Amantes.

Eternal life wasn't Virgil's first choice, but an eternity of sworn protection seemed like a fitting existence for a paladin.
