Alex's upbeat and jovial attitude is a reflection of a lifetime ago, when he was a farmers son with two sisters, and countless friends.
He was one of very few to survive.
The whole town was pillaged and burnt down in the wake of a particularly malicious pirates crew. In a daring hour long pursuit, Alax managed to escape a group of pirates by running into a burning building. It wasn't long before he was captured, but the droup was impressed by alexes grit. He was given an opportunity by the captain; Join or die.
The answer was obvious, and Alex was treated well enough. He was brought on board not just to become a crew member, but to become a friend to the captain's son. Alex fulfilled his role, adopting the lifestyle well, keeping his attitude.
After 7 years with the crew, the captain died of disease, and the overall attitude of the ship was tumultuous. Half of the ship's crew disbanded, and Alex was offered to go back to land. Not eager at first, the pre-teen decided it would be best for him, and he packed up as well.
