As a half-merman, Alexis's physiology is somewhere between that of a merman and that of a human. He has skin (instead of scales), but it's light blue in colour. Furthermore, he has two legs (instead of a tail), but they have webbed feet.
Alexis likes to project a positive, laid-back image. Thus, he grows his hair long and keeps it loose; wears oversized sunglasses wherever he goes; and does his best to maintain a charming smile. Furthermore, his wardrobe is very vibrant and cheerful, consisting of kaleidoscopic rainbow outfits.
Personality
Alexis is an independent free spirit, who always follows his dreams wherever they might lead him. As a result, he always had trouble fitting into any one place (particularly the strict, highly-disciplined regimes of Lennart Kingdom and New Atlantis) - so, he always preferred to explore and tour the world.
In contrast to many of his peers, Alexis always tried to maintain an upbeat attitude towards life - no matter the adversity. This made him excellent company when times got tough - although, it did mean he rarely bothered to prepare himself for tough times (for example, he never saved much money). Therefore, he often had to rely on his friends' assistance to get him out of trouble - although, since he was such great fun to be around, they were always happy to oblige.
Relationships
Nestor - One of Alexis's closest teenage friends, whom he met while they were both training in the military academy. When they first met, Nestor had some very childish and outlandish habits; however, Alexis eventually helped him to grow out of these. In their adulthood, they saw less of each other, as Alexis was busy touring, and Nestor was occupied ruling in New Atlantis. However, they never forgot each other: they exchanged letters once a month, and each was more than happy to aid the other when required.
Diane - A long-time friend of Alexis's, going back to their teenage years. At one time, they were a romantic couple - and after several years together, they planned to marry and start a family. Unfortunately, this didn't happen - mainly because Alexis wished to continue touring, whilst Diane preferred to settle down with New Atlantis. Nevertheless, even after the end of their relationship, they've remained good friends.
Antonio - Alexis's older brother, who helped him through school in his childhood, and through his military education as a teenager. He was a powerful role model in the young Alexis's life - and his untimely death in battle was the only event that ever truly devastated him.
Story
Early years
Alexis Adrianakis was born in the year 18 BGE, to a human father named Adrian, and his mermaid wife Sofia. For the first three years of Alexis's life, the family lived in the town of Pilykara - which, with a population of 3,000, was the largest settlement in the Hendecanese Islands. However, this made for a rather secluded and isolated existence - especially for Adrian, who couldn't venture underwater for any appreciable length of time. Therefore, shortly after Alexis turned three, the family moved away, to New Atlantis City.
Adrian worked as a fisherman, while Sofia was a milk maid, so the couple didn't have a great deal of money in Alexis's youth. Granted, Sofia had inherited some money from her mother, Princess Melissa - but this was spent mostly on the move, and on an education for Alexis and his older son Antonio. A couple of years into his studies, young Alexis was a star pupil who excelled in his exams - and as a reward, his parents purchased a second-hand lute for his 8th birthday. It wasn't very fancy, but Alexis understood it was all they could afford - and he certainly didn't hold it against them. On the contrary, it turned out to be one of his most prized possessions.
In his teenage years, Alexis devoted most of his study time to only two subjects. First, he joined the military academy, where he trained alongside the young Prince Nestor. Second, he learned music, from the esteemed violin virtuouso Vanessis. The old master kitted out Alexis with some proper instruments - which allowed him to demonstrate what he was truly capable of. Sadly, Vanessis passed away at the age of 90, just six months before Alexis was due to graduate - but, he had already imparted a knowledge that would prove invaluable to Alexis for the rest of his life.
Young adulthood and adventures
When Alexis turned 18, he graduated from the military academy, and found employment as a soldier within the army of Nestor's father, Duke Nikolas III. By now, both Alexis and Nestor had become friends with Prince Thomas of Lennart Kingdom, as well as a young mermaid named Diane. Over the next year or so, the four of them frequently went on adventures - on which the princes often got themselves into trouble, forcing Alexis and Diane to bail them out.
Alexis's grandest adventure with Nestor and Diane took place a few months before his 19th birthday. Prince Thomas was struggling to stand up straight (due to his own self-inflicted injuries) - and had decided to venture up the Magic Mountain in search of a cure. Knowing full well that Tom was only going to get himself into trouble, the trio set off after him. Sure enough, they found him stranded in a ravine - but they helped him out, and he was cured of his injuries when he was imbued with the mountain's magical powers (just as his son Kyle would be 35 years later).
When Alexis was 20 years old, his brother Antonio was tragically killed in battle. This devastated Alexis - to such an extent that he decided the military was not for him. He promptly resigned from the army - and from that day forward, he dedicated himself solely to music. He formed a band with Diane (who, by now, was his girlfriend) - and they and their bandmates began to tour the land, writing and performing romantic songs on the violin, lute, xylophone, and every other instrument they could lay their hands on.
For four years, Alexis and Diane performed together in the band - drawing increasingly large crowds, and making a fair amount of money. Once they had saved up enough, they even began to contemplate marriage. Sadly, it became obvious that they now wanted to follow very different paths in life: Diane wanted to settle down, while Alexis wished to carry on travelling and performing. Thus, they made the difficult decision to end their relationship, and follow their own separate paths: Diane would return to New Atlantis, while Alexis and the rest of the band would set up a new base far away from her, in Black Shard Cliffs.
Settling down and fatherhood
Throughout the rest of his 20s, Alexis continued to tour and perform, often in front of kings and queens. For the first two years after leaving Diane, he didn't date anyone else - as he felt nobody was able to replace her. However, in the year 8 AGE, when he was playing in front of Queen Belle III of Magnifloria, he met a charming young half-elf, half-dwarf called Sarah. The two of them bonded immediately - and she was offered a place in Alexis's band, playing the drums. Four years later, on Alexis's 30th birthday, they were married.
Two years after their marriage, Alexis and Sarah welcomed a son, named Hugh. Their friends considered this to be something of a miracle: as both parents were mixed-race, it was seen as unlikely that they could bear offspring at all. Nevertheless, they did - and, two years after Hugh, they welcomed a daughter named Helen. Alexis did continue to perform sporadically throughout his 30s; however, his main focus was on raising his two young children.
In Alexis's later years, he kept a relatively low profile, staying in Black Shard Cliffs with his family. However, he was often visited by long-time fans - and he was happy to sign their autographs and give them a few music lessons. There were so many of them that he was eventually inspired to restart his band - although he played the role of a teacher and mentor, leaving the actual playing of instruments to his younger students. This second incarnation of Alexis's band enjoyed as much success as the first - and, when his parents Adrian and Sofia finally passed away, his loyal bandmates played rousing concerts at the funerals, turning these otherwise-sombre occasions into celebrations of their lives.
Now, as Alexis enters old age, he approaches it with as much enthusiasm and vigour as his younger years. What will his next project be?
