Quirk: Netherworld Messenger

By writing an individual's true name on a sheet of paper, the user can monitor how close the target is to death. The target can be human or an animal (domestic pets that respond to their name).

When the quirk is activated, the colour of the written name will flicker, transitioning from different colours to indicate the target's proximity to death. The colours and meaning are as follows:

Blue: Target is alive and is not experiencing any out of the ordinary or distressing event.

Yellow: Target is in a situation with a high chance of a fatal outcome (i.e. they're next to a high voltage live wire, struggling in high water, walking across a rickety plank up high, etc). Acts as a non-specific warning of a potentially deadly occurrence.

Red: Target has experienced the event predicted beforehand. The name turns red and fades as the target gets closer to death, disappearing completely when the target is deceased. The transition can be instant or drawn out depending on the event (e.g. getting shot in the head and dying instantly vs breaking a leg and slowly bleeding out).

The paper shutters when there is a change in statuses, and is drawn towards the target if they are within range. Quirk activation bequeaths energy to the paper, which gives it its special properties. Thus the duration of the monitoring effect and level of control of the paper's attraction to the target is dependent on the user's stamina; the same is true for the number of names that can be monitored at once.

Paper is only active within a localized area around the quirk user and the user must know both the name and the appearance of the target to activate the quirk. Quirk ceases to work when the paper is wet, burned, or if name on it is abraded or eroded.

Skills

General Skills: Sio works best as support for other heroes as he can monitor the status of his teammates. He's very perceptive and is quick to detect potential hazards and warn others. His strength lies in organizing and running logistics for large groups.

Due to the more passive nature of his quirk, he relies primarily on his teammates and on support items for combat. However, he does have basic melee training so he's not complete deadweight when it comes down to a one-on-one fight.

Quirk Skills:

  • Monitor Team Status: Support skill. User writes the name of multiple targets to monitor health status. Shifts in status alerts user to dangers experienced by individual members of the group, allowing for informed decision making when it comes to sending assistance and determining triage.
  • Locate Target: User writes the name of a target whose location is unknown, and folds the paper into a plane. If the target is close by, the paper plane acts as a compass needle and points towards the target.
  • Track Target: Subskill of locate target. Paper is brought airborne and is explicitly drawn towards the target. Is hindered by obstacles if not steered by the user. More taxing on stamina than base skill.
  • Attack Sortie: Highly situational combat skill. User attacks using paper planes with explosive properties (hero support item), that home in on a target whose identity and appearance are known. Limited ammunition. Highly taxing on stamina.

Background

A superstitious teen of Korean heritage. His father and mother work together as a funeral director and ceremony organizer respectively. His family's gloomy background combined with his tendency to have abyssal luck make his peers rather wary.

Sio is an intelligent young man and recognizes that concepts like curses and bad luck are scientifically unfounded, and yet he fears them all the same. His is a constant struggle between rationality and giving into his superstitious urges, as he's been burned too many times by lady luck for it to be all a mere coincidence ... maybe.

Due to his background and the nature of his quirk, Sio is no stranger to the concept of death. He's conflicted by the fact that his family benefits financially from bereavement, and aspires to become a hero who can prevent senseless deaths. Overall he wishes to be recognized for saving lives rather than for dealing with the aftermath of tragedies.

Because of his upbringing and ability Sio has spent far too long pondering the fragility of life and the inevitability of death. He's prone to existential crises and fears the concept of dying. Although he knows on a rational level that death is a natural fact of life, he finds it incredibly hard to accept on an emotional level. Seeing things dead things or things dying give him panic attacks. He's trying his best not to have this occur, as he wants to be able to focus of saving people He absolutely refuses to kill (not even an insect: he'll dive to save a mosquito from being smacked!). He always calculate risks and considers safety procedures to be of upmost importance. He'll chastise you for leaning back in your chair (what if you fall and crack your head open, huh?!). Because of this many people consider him a worrywart and killjoy.

Miscellaneous

  • His parents have a dark sense of humour. They met for the first time at a business acquaintance's funeral and fell in love (talk about a time and place for everything). They're good folk otherwise and Sio appreciates them all the same.
  • Struggling vegetarian since a few years ago and the only one in his family. He really actually loves fish and is often tempted. Despite his dietary restrictions he snacks on junk food like chips and the sort pretty regularly, so he doesn't eat the healthiest. He also has a tendency to gain weight quickly to his dismay. It's a constant cycle of eat garbage, notice weight gain, then health purge.
  • Likes numbers! Great at math and accounting. He helps his father balance the books for his company out of a sense of obligation. He'd rather not deal with funeral stuff otherwise (much to his dad's mild disappointment. He tries to convince Shioh to come around from time to time).
  • His birth was unexpected: he was raised predominantly by his grandmother in his formative years, as his parents were swamped with work at the time.
  • Has a bunch of lucky charms on him at all times, just in case stuff like bad luck is real. Which it isn't ... right?
  • His Hanja name is the edgiest thing ever and roughly translates to Shadow Corpse Raven... (see note on his parents sense of humour).
  • His quirk and hero outfit is based on the concept of the 저승사자, a Korean grim reaper. They carry a book with the names of the dead, and seek out the individuals to send them to the afterlife.
