Profile

Esk 1191

Seeker is twice-transformed. He began life as a crawling worm, knowing only endless hunger and fear, until he followed the old calls and voice that told him to Still. He bound himself, but the hunger and fear were still with him, and in shame and need he ate his body. The hunger was the only thing more consuming than the pain. Only his memories remained.

He heard the old calls again.

Things itched. They shifted. They ached. They Became.

Gradually the voices that had told him to Still gave him a new song. It was uncomfortable, being bound. He struggled. He felt the give of his prison.

He was New. As he spread his back, the wind caught him, and he was no longer a crawling thing. He knew more. He knew the ways, the wind, the light, what was sweet and soft and his. He knew the others, worms who had heard the old call. He slept among them at night, all of their backs folded together. The air danced with scent and color, with the calls of his people.

He should have been with them when the heat and light swept over him, but he was alone. It was not the old hunger but Death, Death, Death. With it came a suffocating and evil darkness, and though he reached with all of his limbs he could no longer smell the others. He could not feel the wind. He could not taste the gifts of the earth.

He began to lose his memories.

Something new reached for him. Not the old call, not the hunger, not the wind. Something he had never encountered, nothing from his old life.

When he woke, he was once again New.
