The product of young teenage fooling around, Esme was fortunate enough to have three parents and a brother. While Varrenhall had a hard time swallowing the existence of a bastard, Aeife did so with ease. Her step mother accepted her without hesitation, allowing Romina to move into the estate so the children would grow up together. While life was peaceful inside, the existence of a bastard bearing the crest of Somhairle was a scandal in the islands. Ultimately, the decision came to grant Esme a bastard's name and put her on the track for Knighthood. Esme has excelled in what she does, though is always acutely aware of the issues she causes by existing. Her ascent to her current status was hard earned, as in many ways being the Duke's bastard made the expectations higher and the people who wanted her to succeed fewer. The situation was made worse when Dagor chose her over Ekkehard as children. While Ekkehard did gain a perfectly respectable Wyvern, it wasn't Dagor.

Esme has always tried to keep a proper appearance and do her best to not bring further shame on the family. As such, she didn't act like a child even as a child. Esme opted for short hair to make work with Romina easier, forwent play in exchange for readings and lance training, and never acted out of her emotions. Even at the academy, something everyone in the family hoped would allow her to explore herself, she stays even keeled and rarely relaxes around those around her. Outside of Dagor and her immediate family, few are aware that another side of her exists. She and Ekkehard are more alike than most think. While Ekkehard loves people, Esme loves the wilds. For all of her composure, underneath rests someone who is reckless, adventurous, and endlessly caring for those she cares about.

And also a terrible temper.

• Initially won Dagor's respect by attacking him after he went after Ekkard when he was around a year old. Dagor bit her quite hard on the leg, an action Esme returned in kind. The two are inseperable now.
