Niranenya was born to Lady Rowena of House Mora in Solstheim. By then, however, she was hardly a lady as she had lost nearly all her possessions to the eruption of the Red Mountain. Rowena had been a devoted follower of Azura and a member of House Redoran by marriage. She was born to the lesser House Mora, but they were old and respectable, and House Redoran was new and not as well established.
Azura had warned her loyal followers that the volcano's eruption was imminent, but stubborn Rowena refused to evacuate. She thought their manor was high enough and well protected to survive the volcano, and fleeing would have meant leaving most of their possessions behind. She didn't tell her husband about the warning.
Sure enough, the volcano erupted, burying the land in ash. The manor was spared the worst of the disaster, but all the guards and servants fled, leaving Rowena and her husband alone to face the Argonian raiders who followed the eruption. Rowena was forced to flee alone with only what she could carry, her husband killed by looters. She found her way to Solstheim to live in crowded port cities with the other refugees.
Rowena, spoiled as she was, admirably dug in her heels and took whatever jobs she could. She started out as a weaver but with so many workers available, her wages only got lower and lower. Finally, she decided she could make more at a brothel and did just that, eventually working her way up to owning her own. This is when her daughter Niranenya was born. Rowena would never admit to not knowing the father but she suspects Niranenya has some Nord blood. She grew up with the other refugee children and became quite a handful to raise. She got into fights often and as an adolescent she started fighting in the pits, and winning. She inherited all of her mother's stubbornness, and they would always fight about her future. Rowena wanted her to try to marry back into the Redoran family so that she could move out of the refugee slums, but Niranenya got an apprenticeship with a blacksmithing and continued winning pit fights just to spite her. One particularly bad fight sent her packing and smuggled aboard a ship bound for Skyrim, where Niranenya heard there were much more lucrative fights to be had.
