The Siren is a purposed organism created by Whispers of Shattered Stars to deal with the overpopulation of black lizards in their superstructure. Like its title suggests, its most prominent peculiarity is its ability to emit loud noises to scare off predators. It isn't physically strong, but its speed makes up for it. After abandoning the task it was created for, Siren has discovered the joy of travelling and terrorising the wildlife with its horrible voice. The Siren itself isn't unaffected by its own loudness; its hearing is bad and thus it has trouble detecting certain dangers.

Likes

  • passage_saint.pngAdventuring and trying new things. New sights excite it. Anything is more preferable than the boring lizard invested pipes it used to live in for most of its life.
  • passage_saint.pngLiving. After getting put of the pipes it has grown a new appreciation for life and isn't nearly as keen to escaping the cycle.
  • passage_saint.pngOther slugcats. It grew up in solitude with only Overseers for company, and they don't have enough personality for its tastes.

Dislikes

  • passage_outlaw.pngEating lizard meat. It has grown bored of eating black lizards each cycle and won't consume any lizard's meat unless necessary. Siren will be briefly stunned after consuming lizard meat much like how Saint would.
  • passage_outlaw.pngInsects. They aren't deterred by its defence tactics, so it must avoid them as much as possible.
  • passage_outlaw.pngSleeping in a same shelter for a few cycles straight. It grows bored very easily and not switching things up once in a while drains it.

Having grown up with very little social interactions, it naturally isn't well socialized in comparison to slugcats raised in packs. A lot of social clues are lost to it, and thus other slugcats can find its presence a little overwhelming, if Siren happens to come across them in the first place.

Siren is energetic and adventurous creature. New sights and problems in need of solutions excite it because of its love for new experiences. Being stuck in a cycle isn't much of a problem as long as it doesn't have to stay in one area for long enough to get bored of it.

Abilities

  • passage_survivor.pngShriek: When approached by a predator, it can let out a long high-pitched piercing sound to briefly stun it or confuse it and use the opportunity to get past them. It can also be used to escape the jaws of a lizard. It is particularly effective with black lizards as they have very sensitive hearing. It isn't efective with insects.
  • passage_survivor.pngDiving: Because of the lung capacity needed for its screaming, it is capable to stay under water longer than the average slugcat.
  • passage_survivor.pngMark of Communication: Siren only gained this when meeting Five Pebbles.

Design Notes

  • passage_scholar.pngSiren has loose skin around its neck which will expand when it sucks in air in preparation for a scream. Think of howler monkeys.
  • passage_scholar.pngIt has three spikes on its back which will shiver when it screams, its a threat display.
  • passage_scholar.pngIts skin is smooth and slimy, just like a slug.
  • passage_scholar.pngThe ruffles on its tail are optional and a stylistic choice.
  • passage_scholar.pngScars are optional, it got them when sneaking away from Stars's superstructure.

karma_3.pngRelationships

Q9Yjawe.png

Siren's creator. Siren never has liked them and won't in the future either. Their interactions were very limited due to the fact that Stars never bothered to give them the Mark of Communication. Siren was merely doing its creator's dirty work, cleaning the superstructure's lizard invested pipes. It felt envious of Stars's other slugcats who were created for greater tasks such as bringing messages to other iterators while it wasted away in their pipes. Siren doesn't regret sneaking away.

Gourmand_portrait.png

Siren met Gourmand on its travels after meeting Five Pebbles, and the meeting left Siren with new hopes and great appreciation for the stranger's positive outlook on life. Had it not met Gourmand, Siren probably would have listened to Five Pebble's advice and travelled to the Depths.

karma_2.pngHistory

Siren's interactions with living creatures was very limited in its puphood, with only Overseers for company. They were tasked with ensuring that Siren will grow into its purpose adequately. Once it was deemed old enough to look after itself Siren was released into Whispers of Shattered Stars's dark pipes, which were infested with black lizards. The number of lizards began to drop along with Siren's level of happiness. It envied Stars's messengers, who could see the outside world, while it was stuck in a cycle of a cycle.

When the taste of lizard meat began to get worse and worse, Siren decided that it would sneak away and look for a new purpose it would be happy with. The escape was risky business due to the only path outside that Siren had access to was heavily populated with lizards, more than anywhere else. In the end it managed to slip away relatively unscratched but unable to ever return, which never posed a problem.

Meeting Five Pebbles

After the escape Siren spent cycles just wandering around free but still feeling somewhat lost and unfulfilled. It stumbled upon the area shared by Five Pebbles and Looks to the Moon and for the sake of curiousity it decided to scratch its way into FP's chamber, who was very unimpressed with this. He gifted it The Mark of Communication and after showing his displeasure of another creature finding its way into his systems, he gave the vague directions for the Depths if the creature desired a way out of the cycle.

Five Pebbles's advice left it quite shaken and unsure of its desires. With nothing better to do, it desiced to at least make sure the Depths excisted and the iterator wasn't lying. It never quite made it deep enough because it was intercepted by a starnger slugcat in Subterranean. The stranger, The Gourmand, perhaps knew what Siren's intentions were and instead guided it outside Five Pebbles's domain to show it the redeeming features of the cycle. The Siren felt more hopeful and was able to see the joys of the world with Gourmand's help. They parted ways, with Gourmand going back to its colony and Siren going to seek new lands and experiences.

Trivia

  • passage_wanderer.pngThe Siren is my first RW OC :)
  • passage_wanderer.pngSiren lived around the same time as The Gourmand.
  • passage_wanderer.pngIt has somewhat poor relationship with the scavengers. The Siren may have screamed at them a few times because of their threat displays.
