Story

Originally from the conservative 70s Texas countryside Leland was the high school football team captain and plays offensive tackle.
Gay and pagan although this was kept on the downlow. He often taught wilderness survival to the town kids and they could often be seen going out foraging with him.
He was scouted and got a scholarship for college football and seemed to have a promising future to go pro.
On his last year during break when visiting home someone must have overheard him speaking to a child or the kid told their parents about the deity called the Great Mother and the tree Leland worshipped her at.
The small religious town was incensed as rumors, fear, and rage quickly spread; as if this was still the time of witch trials Leland was ambushed unaware on his way home, they buried him alive under the Great Mothers tree.
Unbeknownst to them before he suffocated he cursed the town and pled for vengeance.
He was revived by the Great Mother as an undying vengeful guardian of wild places. Those that wronged him fed him and in turn the land he was reborn from.

Fast forward:
Leland traveled every few years or so, he doesn’t seem to age so he couldn’t put down roots and there could only be so many ‘disappearances or animal attacks’ before he felt the need to move on, as is the life of a man eating vengeful spirit.
He often chose a life as a college student but not always, he’d otherwise dwell in whatever wild spaces he can find just on the fringes of civilization. It was one of these stints, playing college football in California that he met Jeremiah. The two teammates became fast friends after the initial weariness of meeting someone else ‘other’. Jeremiah later told Leland of his family, a group of ‘others’ traveling as a Metal band who would gladly welcome him into their fold. He now plays Keytar for Corpsewood.
