velkyn was raised on the surface by his drow father and human mother. they lived basically in a cottage in the woods, and velkyn grew up a bit sheltered from that. he wasn't completely cut off from the outside world-- he traveled a bit with his parents and visited the nearby towns, but their home was remote enough that it was pretty much just him and his parents. his dad was a rogue and over the years taught velkyn all he knew, mostly just for survival skills. so basically velkyn was a ranger with the skillset of a rogue lol.
his dad was pretty unhappy about drow society (which is why he ran away to the surface) and told velkyn a lot of stories about how bad it is down there; how men are subjugated and women are in charge, lots of fighting, etc. velkyn didn't really pay attention to most of it, because he was too distracted thinking about the hot dominant women. he'd never tell his dad this, but he secretly wished he could be the husband of one of those women.
eventually velkyn set off on his own, seeking adventure or whatever. and he got his wish, stumbling across a priestess of lolth doing some sort of freaky ritual in the woods. why was she on the surface? unimportant. what is important is that velkyn was smitten with her pretty much immediately. after a kind of strange first meeting, they gradually bonded (because velkyn proved himself to be very obedient) and fell in love! or something. either way, they eventually got married and he became lolth-sworn too, hence his red eye.
they traveled around together for some time, until they both got captured and infected with mind flayer tadpoles and yadda yadda. then they were kind of forced to go on a big adventure to cure themselves, which ended up being an even bigger adventure to save the world! and they did! and then immediately went back to their normal lives because velkyn is kind of uncomfortable with the idea of being a beloved hero of a gigantic city. too much attention. too many people. he'd rather go back to exploring the woods and killing monsters and stuff. so they did!
