Overview...

Ao Yelan is best described as a terse woman with lots of inner turmoil. She's highly principled - or stubborn, as some might call it - and prone to tunnel vision. Once she has her mind set on a goal, neither hell nor high water can tear her from her path. As a wandering cultivator, Ao Yelan does not form many close relationships, and she seems only to seek out casual romances with people who treat her poorly.

What Others See...

Yelan often comes off as taciturn and sometimes rude. She does not take well to strangers, and takes quite a bit of time to warm up to people. Besides that, her impulse control seems poor, and her judgement and taste in partners is highly questionable. Abrupt is perhaps the best way to decribe her.

Hidden Depths...

If people take the time to get to know Yelan, she can actually be rather sweet. She's thoughtful, protective, and even somewhat talkative to those she's close with. The stubbornness that she has is an acquired trait, born from a hard-headed family and several years stumbling through her young adulthood alone. In truth, Yelan only clings to her decisions because she struggles to admit it when she's wrong. Her romantic procliviaties, meanwhile, are borne of a lack of self-respect. Because of her experiences with Lu Sucheng, she feels that kindness is just a facade, and she would rather be with someone who is at least going to be open about how little they respect her.

Ao Yelan was born as the eldest daughter of the Ao family in Qingliang Xihu, the descendants of the town's semi-mythical founder, the demigoddess Ao Lin. She came into the world mere minutes after her twin brother, Ao Yelong, but those minutes made all the difference. She was born in the next hour, and while her brother was foretold to have an auspicious fate, hers was quite the opposite. She was born cursed, and would have a road of endless struggles and ill luck.

Ao Yelan lived quietly in Qingliang Xihu. She rarely made friends, because while people were perfectly polite to her, they didn't dare to get too close. The exception to this was Lu Sucheng, the young lord from a large city who came to learn under Ao Yelan's father, the great warrior Ao Qingyan. The two of them, along with Ao Yelong, studied swordsmanship, martial arts, and cultivation under Ao Qingyan from a young age. As they grew into teenagers, Yelan and Sucheng grew very close, and even fell in love. Eventually, Lu Sucheng got news that meant he had to leave Ao Qingyan's apprenticeship and return home, and he asked Yelan to come home with him and marry him, and Ao Yelan, having always wanted to leave her village and see the world, was more than happy. Her parents, however, were less pleased. Ao Yelan was only seventeen, still young, and both her father and her mother were severely overprotective of her. They forbid it, and told her that she was not allowed to have further contact with Lu Sucheng. She fought the decision, but her parents wouldn't budge. In a fit of anger during the argument, her father told her that, fine, she can leave with that boy, but she better never return. That night, Ao Yelan left Qingliang Xihu and has not returned since.

Once she left her village, things went downhill within the week. Lu Sucheng left her at the first inn they stayed at. It turns out, he had been using her the whole time, all to get to one of her clan's sacred artifacts. The Ao family were the protectors of Qingliang Xihu, and had custody of a set of treasures gifted from the dragon spirit Dalong to his daughter Ao Lin. It was one of these that Lu Sucheng had been after this whole time, and Ao Yelan had only been a means to an end. She overheard Sucheng meeting with an accomplice of his when she was out for a walk during the night, bragging about how easy Ao Yelan had been to manipulate and how easy it had been for him to get access to the artifact with her trust. She moved to confront him, but Lu Sucheng only laughed and rode away. Even as she stole a horse and rode after him, his accomplices attacked her, successfully beating her back and letting Lu Sucheng get away. Yelan vowed that she would hunt him down and retrieve her clan's belongings, and has dedicated herself to that task ever since. She has found very few leads on his whereabouts, but has slowly been investigating his clan and what it is they might want her family's artifacts for. Ashamed of her naivety and failure, Ao Yelan vowed that she cannot return home until she's retrieved what she let get stolen.

Description

Yelan is a beautiful young woman, with cold and elegant features. As a distant descendant of the dragon Dalong, she bears some unique features that mark her as different. Her arms are scaled blue below the elbow, and her fingers are sharply clawed. Additionally, her eyes are an unnatural blue, with strange patterns inside of them. She even has inherited some control over the rain and water, and her skin is always cold and almost clammy to the touch. She has very long black hair that she often leaves down or tied back simply. She wears robes of white and grey, with silver ornamentation. Her fingertips are adorned with ornamental silver rings that cover her claws.
