Nalfein grew up in Menzoberranzan in a lesser Drow house. She was told by her parents that she would train to become a high preistess for Lolth, but she wanted to be a fighter and protect her house They disagreed with her wish, and told her that fighting was the mens jobs. Nalfein got into a huge-scale argument with the high preistesses and her matron mother, eventually they had gone so far to force her to give up her dream of becoming a warrior.

One night she packed a small bag and took the first weapon she could find, a bow and arrows, and fled Menzoberranzan. She roamed around the underdark for a while and then went to the surface world to experience life above ground.

The first town she happened upon, they kicked her out of the tavern and chased her out of town. The second village she came upon was different, however. She went into the tavern expecting a conflict to rise because of her, and she got one. Nalfein put up a fight to defend herself, and almost killed a dozen people. She decided that because she was deemed untrustworthy everywhere she went, she would live alone, not near any "stupid humans" or towns so she wouldn't bother anyone.
