Profile

Power Index: Power to use a type of cold fire.  Can shoot at others, encase self/other people with a protective fire shield, fly, reradiate fire and fire-related attacks flung at him at others.  Requires a lot of energy because this brand of fire isn’t naturally very hot, which means it can’t injure regular people unless he’s putting a lot of juice into his attacks.

Family: Abigail Lewis-West [wife] | Madison Lewis-West [step-daughter], Elizabeth Lewis-West [step-daughter], Lydia West [daughter]

Background: When Martin was still in high school, his powers started to gradually emerge, subtly at first, but becoming harder to control.  His mom was the first to confront him about it, which had Martin worried since he didn’t know how he’d explain his burgeoning fire abilities.  He was surprised when she said she knew what was going on since she had the same powers too.  She used to be a superheroine when she was younger, but set aside that persona to start a family.  She gives him some training on how to use his abilities, though it turns out that his powers are a little different from her own.  She then goes to an old friend she had during her hero days who now works at a relatively new place that uses technology and instruction to help superhumans get their powers under control: The Simmons Institute.  Martin is one of the first students in The Institute’s training program, and is given tech that keeps his powers under control when in public.

At present, Martin is an ER surgeon and takes his job very seriously, which means the erratic flames would get in the way if not for the containment band he wears.  He was an acquaintance with Abigail Lewis since she works in the same hospital, but never got to talking until he found out about her problem with her eldest daughter and her fiery powers showing up.  Martin tells her about The Institute and offers to introduce mother and daughter to the people there, and finds himself paired off with Abigail’s daughter, Maddie, as her mentor.  There’s some slight friction at first until the two get used to each other and see that they’ve got similar personalities, which helps them to sync up in fights.  Like Maddie, his father had also gotten killed in the line of duty–as a fireman, ironically, given Martin’s powers–which is something he can understand when he sees that Maddie still struggles with that sense of loss.

Since he’s seeing the Lewis family a lot, Martin is able to develop more of a social life because of them, and especially with Abigail.  The two didn’t realize they were dating until they figured out they were seeing each other just for each other and not to discuss The Institute or how Maddie’s training was progressing.  Maddie, of course, blows up when she finds out about this six months into her training (and her mom seeing her mentor), which results in a huge rift between them for a while.  Martin gives her some space, though he discreetly tracks her when she goes off to do solo her work, which results in him saving her from an encounter with a superhuman fight ring who didn't have any qualms about killing kids.  They're able to talk things out and get on the way to making amends before Martin takes Maddie back to patch things up with her family.  It isn’t long after that Martin proposes to Abigail, the both of them making the wedding a small affair with a few close friends and family.

Personality:

  • Stretches himself thin with his work and hero stuff and has zero social life due to that
  • Lays the sarcasm on thick when it comes to working with the Junior Members; if they’re gonna be snarky with him, he’ll be snarky right back
  • Prefers to incapacitate rather than injure people in a fight…unless they really tick him off or start targeting innocents
  • Only uses about 50% of his power most of the time since he doesn’t want to lose control of it.  It’s happened before and he doesn’t plan on it happening again
  • Uses his abilities in the operating room (incognito) for fast cauterizing, and with The Team for the same thing.  His philosophy is if he has these powers for a reason, he’s going to use it to help however many people he can
  • Not phased by blood and gore due to his job
  • Self-deprecating sense of humor used to put patients and new kids at The Institute that he looks after at to put at ease
  • Slightly OCD in that he has a very rigid schedule he likes to stick to, and needs things to be in order.  Changed after he gets married and has to get used to a hectic life with step kids and a baby
  • Usually the first one to pinpoint the number of people in an area where a fight erupts and coordinates with The Team to draw the fight away to avoid collateral damage
  • Has to sort of dissociate in surgery since he knows he can’t save every patient, and he can’t let it tear him up to the point where he can’t function for weeks afterwards

Goals: Help as many people as possible without hurting anyone if that can be accomplished, and make sure that the kids who join the Institute recognize the extent of their powers and how to fine-tune and control it to avoid collateral damage.
