BAOYU

  • The former Arbiter General of the Xianzhou Zhuming who retired to return to the life of a decadent socialite on the Luofu. It is said that he is a blade who shamefully lost its edge; however, his perception and insight are still sharp. Although he is now legally a civilian, his insight is still highly sought out by the Cloud Knights and the current Arbiter Generals.

HISTORY

  • The golden child of the reputable and affluent Song Clan of the Xianzhou Alliance, Baoyu was born into high expectations due to the affluence of his family and their high ranking positions throughout the Xianzhou. The Song Clan, although small and stretched thin throughout the fleet, had connections to all Six Charioteers and the Ten Lords Commission on each flasgship. It was only during Baoyu's generation that they had intended to expand, adopting and marrying their members out to other reputable clans throughout the Alliance to grow their numbers.
    • Baoyu's birth was considered auspicious during his birth divination, as he was "born with a jade" and this was considered either an omen of prosperity for the Song Clan, or their destruction. They were warned to be extremely careful about how they will raise Baoyu.
    • As you could imagine, the Song Clan took this horribly wrong and assumed that this meant protection rather than proper upbringing.
    • Due to the nature of his birth and his "jade eye," Baoyu was more or less considered more of an object than a person. He was treated like a doll growing up.
      • He was more or less constantly monitored, forcing him to lock himself up in his room unless it was for meals, training, or parties.
      • He was paraded around like an accessory. He was the lucky charm, the Auspicious Jade of the Song.
      • He was not allowed to leave the haven without assistance or a nanny. They were paranoid that he would be taken from them.
      • He was forced to undergo numerous divinations against his will if he ever acted out, his family fearing that his disobedience bodes ill for the family.
        • Baoyu particularly hated divinations. He was constantly being read against his will and even had "personal diviners" read his mind and every move and forced him to comply.
        • His thoughts were not his own, and he forced upon himself the thoughts of his family to prevent diviners from peering into him too often.
        • These procedures were incredibly invasive and always done without his consent. The Master Diviner before Fu Xuan would take coin from the Song Clan and gave divinations to ensure that Baoyu was on the right path. What they didn't expect was to hear that they were doing the wrong thing. This was taken badly, and threw the family into disarray.
        • This resulted in Baoyu feeling traumatized by Divinations, and more or less avoided the Divination Commission altogether to the best of his ability as he grew up.
    • Unfortunately for Baoyu, he was born talented in different aspects and skills. This more or less convinced the Song Clan that he truly was the object of their prosperity. Rather than nurturing him properly, they forced him to excel incredibly fast and put pressure on him in order for him to become a proper status symbol for them.
      • Baoyu had a talent in wielding a sword and a spear. He was highly perceptive to reading his opponents. All he needed was guidance in form and honorable combat. His main method of lashing out growing up was to train by himself.
      • He was also intelligent and intellectually gifted, as he was highly perceptive, observant, and critical. What the family wasn't aware of was that he developed these skills as a result of his upbringing. He was both book smart and street smart.
      • Music and dance were his inclinations outside of martial arts. He was talented in the sense that he could hear even the slightest change in the wind, the slightest ticks and tocks of machinery, instruments and the like. His ability was highly sought out in the Zhuming.
    • Baoyu suffered greatly at the hands of his family treating him like an object rather than a person. He struggled with the concept of individuality and personhood throughout his teen years. This resulted in him getting into dangerous relationships as he was growing up. Even with his cousins and siblings, he was outcasted among them as they hated him for being the golden child and the lucky charm of the entire clan over being born with a "jade eye."
    • He was not even permitted to find jobs even after he had finished his education. He was just there to sit pretty and do nothing. Even in adulthood, his family did not trust him to leave on his own, so even well into his fifties he kept sneaking out and about like a young teenager.
    • Due to the upbringing that was thrust upon him by his family, he had developed a habit of reading people and their intentions by their face, eyes, gestures and actions. He had become paranoid of his family, and he was aware of this. He did not want to become paranoid of the outside world, too, but this is what trauma does.

  • It did not take long before Baoyu ran away from home to join the Cloud Knights when he reached his first century. Sick of the delicate treatment at home. The arrival of a Song within the Cloud Knights caused up a stir, as the clan themselves were known to view themselves higher than those who resort to military duty. Moreover; the famed Precious Jade of the Song came on his own without his usual retinue. Baoyu, with his resolve, asked that he be accepted.
    • He did in fact showcase his abilities with a sword and a spear, and he managed to physically keep up with the rest of the Knights. He was not just a family name, and he earned some modicum of respect for at least being able to keep up.
    • He asked that he have his legal name changed to Su, as he came to the Cloud Knights to sever his ties with his clan. This caused quite a stir with the higher ups, who were aware that the Song may file charges and call for investigations over Baoyu's choices, but ultimately his decisions were respected, and he was assisted in the procedures of changing his legal name.
    • This did not sit well with the Song family at all. They had lost their jade, and paid a hefty sum to the Cloud Knights to hand Baoyu back.
      • The current presiding Arbiter General of the Zhuming did not take well to the bribe, as it compromised the integrity of the Cloud Knights. They did not hand Baoyu over.
      • Knowing the Song Clan has one small family in every Xianzhou Flagship, the current Arbiter General saw little use in Baoyu being transferred.
    • Baoyu was not given promotions because of his name, but his talent and his growing personality had turned him rather charming to the Cloud Knights and his superiors, who were rather interested in his growth as a warrior. His promotions were fairly given, and he was also punished for making attempts to charm others to get his way.
    • He has been growing into his own person for the past few decades, enjoying his life without his family breathing down on him. He earned enough that he could have a place to stay when he was dismissed from duty, rather than return home.
    • However; there have been attempts to kidnap Baoyu and return him home to the Song Family Haven. These actions have been investigated after Baoyu personally reported on stalking and break-in cases.
    • Regardless, Baoyu's life as a Cloud Knight within the Zhuming was not smooth sailing due to his family making it difficult for him.
    • As a Cloud Knight, Baoyu was interesting. He would throw parties for his friends and for those who earned huge promotions. While these were seen as small things, Baoyu claimed that even small things should be celebrated.
    • As it turns out, Baoyu only missed home because of the opulence and decadence, but he did not view the simpler life of a Cloud Knight to be any lesser. Rather, he wanted to take his riches to his new companions.
      • This wasn't unwelcome, and it was rather more than welcome because it raised morale and pushed the Cloud Knights to pursure greater heights and excel if they wanted Baoyu's parties.
      • What Baoyu didn't say is that he believed that these material things will make his companions stay.

  • How Baoyu rose up to become the Arbiter General was interesting to say the least. The General before him had given him fair promotions and as he rose in ranks he also gained wisdom, and eventually became a sort of advisor to the General. His perception and ability to read his enemies came in handy, especially when it came to fighting the Borisin and other external threats to the Zhuming. He was sharp on the battlefield, but he was sharper as a strategist. He saw the bigger picture and gave insight that benefitted the Cloud Knights in general.
    • The General asked Baoyu if he wanted to become the next General after they retire. Baoyu didn't say no, but left the decision to the current General if they saw him fit enough. He retained his humility despite being hedonistic and materialistic. Baoyu did not expect anything to come out of the conversation. He was happy where he was as long as he was away from his family.
    • Baoyu, despite his worldliness, was generally respected throughout the Cloud Knights of the Zhuming.
      • Although he was not particularly close to anyone, he was generous to all and openly threw parties to reward himself and his compatriots.
      • Despite being under the assumption that he was sheltered, Baoyu gives interesting insight that helped others, including his superiors, reframe their way of thinking. His earnesty is not taken for granted, and is considered rather refreshing. He had no ill intention towards anyone.
      • He denies it, but he has a certain pull on people that make them drawn to him. He wouldn't say he's a natural leader, but he knows how to make people listen. That was very important to the current General.
      • Baoyu has humility, despite being a Song. One could argue that he was feigning it, but he was in fact, humble. He doesn't brag nor outwardly put himself above others. He would much rather be beside others, tired of being put on a pedestal. He was considered different from his family.
      • Despite throwing parties so often, he is very organized and knows how to keep things in an orderly manner away from his frivolities.
      • Baoyu never once complained about not having parties nor taking breaks. He took his work in stride and happily did his duties. One could say he loved his job, but the truth is that he believed the Cloud Knights gave him more freedom than home ever could.
    • Baoyu was eventually delegated to the position of military advisor by none other than General themselves. They considered his insight and opinions far too imporant to lose to war. He was given his own attendants and bodyguards, and was also made into the liaison between the Generals and Cloud Knights throughout the fleet.
    • His job was not considered out of left field, and people were not as surprised nor vexed about Baoyu being given such a high position beyond Corporal. This was done with careful consideration of his abilities and what he has contributed to the Cloud Knights as a whole.

  • To his own surprise, he was named the next Arbiter General of the Zhuming; not for his skill, but for his ability to make people listen and bring them together. Unity was more important than strength, and Baoyu knew how to bring others together. He was given the style name Xunhua (纁花 lit. crimson flower) upon his inauguration.
    • As Arbiter General, his traits were known to be Insightful and Generous.
    • Instead of General Su Baoyu, he was more commonly known as General Su Xunhua. He prefered using his style name more, as his formal name was much too intimate with others at this point.
    • He led the Cloud Knights against the Borisin, and it was here that Baoyu's skills seemed to fit under weakening his enemies first before his soldiers dealt the final blow. He attributed the glory of their victories to his soldiers rather than his leadership.
    • He was notably reserved about Divination in general, but upon meeting again with the Master Diviner, he had profusely apologized for giving into his family's wishes on giving intrusive divinations on him. Baoyu decided that as Arbiter General, he should work with the Divination Commission regardless of his comfort and discomfort.
    • As General of the Xianzhou Zhuming, Baoyu's weapon was granted to him by Lan the Hunt, a grand spear with the ability to cut through stars and the night. It was called the Star Slashing Night Cutting Heavenly Blade. Baoyu simply called this the Star Slayer. This weapon would later be passed down to Huaiyan when Baoyu retires.
    • Baoyu also worked with the High Cloud Quintet, and became a close ally and advocate for them.
      • He was familiar with Yingxing, and vouched for him to be transferred to the Luofu at Huaiyan's orders. When he met Yingxing again as a grown man, he was proud of him. Yingxing gave him a new weapon, the Fell Star, which Baoyu uses now.
      • Baoyu and Huaiyan coordinated supplies, weapons, and fleets to be sent to General Teng Xiao of the Luofu through Baiheng and a young Jing Yuan.
      • Baoyu more often than not called for Baiheng to lead the Foxian pilots to help with dealing with Abominations of Abundance. Although she always crashed, Baoyu always had knights fetch her and ensure her safe return to the Quintet.
      • Alongside Jingliu, he would also train a young Jing Yuan when time permitted, and when the Quintet visited the Zhuming to assist in the war against the Plagues Author.
      • It was Baoyu that suggested to Teng Xiao to consider Jing Yuan for candidacy over becoming the new General of the Luofu. It wasn't bias, but rather, his forward thinking believing that Jing Yuan would grow into a fine warrior under Jingliu's tutelage.
      • Although Baoyu did not concern himself in Vidyadhara matters, he offered to extend a helping hand to Dan Feng over matters in the Luofu.
      • When people asked Baoyu why even as General he relied on the High Cloud Quintet so much, he explains to them that he simply wanted to see what they were made of and to bring their talents to good use.
    • Sadly, in his age, he was in danger of getting Mara-Struck, and in a fit of Mara-induced insanity, he was taken to the Alchemy Commission of the Zhuming and was taken care of by this future attendant, a Foxian named Yanli. Later on, Baoyu would not be seen without Yanli, and there was a growing concern that Baoyu may soon succumb to Mara fully.
    • Baoyu, worried for himself and what time he has left before becoming Mara-struck, had named Huaiyan his successor for the leadership of the Zhuming.
    • He was present at the inauguration of Jing Yuan as the Arbiter General of the Xianzhou Luofu. Actually, he would say he claims no favoritism, as he also was present at the inauguration of all the current Arbiter Generals of the Xianzhou Fleet, no matter how far they were. He made himself present, and congratulated each and every one of them.

  • After 700 years of being the Arbiter General, Baoyu decided to retire. He claims that he simply was not as sharp as he used to be when he started, and when he was in his prime. He also tells another lie that he misses the opulence and decadence of his rich lifestyle. The truth is, the burden of becoming Mara-struck was weighing heavy on him.
    • Baoyu's departure from the Cloud Knights was met with a mournful goodbye. As he stepped down, he was granted the highest honors upon dismissal. After dismissal, Huaiyan gifted him his signature silk robe that he wore around and used as a weapon.
    • While not entirely riddled with fear, he still felt shackled by so many things. Now that he was no longer a member of the Cloud Knights, he was then again faced with the burden that was to face his family after all these centuries. He believed he had healed in the time he had bee away, and he wasn't going to undo all of that.
    • So he killed his entire family on the Zhuming, all of them on his own. Instead of just running away.
      • His own parents, his siblings, his cousins, even the children, all of them.
      • He decided that he was going to end the Song lineage once and for all, for what they did to him and what they believed in.
      • Being the former General, he made quick work of them, disregarding the fact that his family held position among the Commissions.
      • He knew it was a bad move, but he set the place on fire, to burn away his past.
    • He fled to the Luofu and tampered with the evidence that made it look like he was already on the Luofu when the massacre happened. This was considered strange because those who took note of his departure and arrival swore that he left for the Luofu after the massacre. However; the evidence, althuogh tampered, was there. Baoyu got away scot free.
    • Out of fear for his life, the Song Clan branch on the Luofu took him in, fearing that there was someone or something after their "precious jade." Little did they know, he planned to kill all of them too. It was more difficult of a job than on the Zhuming because they were considerably the larger branch.
      • The Song Clan of the Luofu had three families. One head branch and two small families. Baoyu had discovered that the matriarch had connections to the Disciples of Sanctus Medicus, and decided to use this against her. He had her put in the Shackling Prison and the rest of the Song Clan as her accomplices.
      • What happened to the children? Baoyu sent them away to foster homes and took over the haven for himself.
    • The Song Tragedy on the Zhuming as well as the dismantling of the Song on the Luofu with Baoyu being the only survivor stirred controversy around him. Despite his name legally being Su now, he was still considered a member of the Song family.
      • Although there were no evidence that it was him who did it, his survival of both tragedies unscathed had rumors spreading.
      • Because there was no proof he did it, he still inherited all the riches from his family. He was of course, the inheritor of their will as the golden child. All collaterals and personal effects that have been retrieved went to him.
      • From his time as the General of the Zhuming, he had become shrewd and his testimonies aligned with the "evidence" that he was innocent.
      • The tragedy actually bore consequences to the Zhuming and the Luofu, due to the fact that the members of the Song had held high positions and rank within the Commissions. Not that this was Baoyu's problem at all.
      • Members of the Song Clan from other Xianzhou Flagships have been met with vitriol and hostility from Baoyu, who claimed they were after the rights to inheritance from him. He put up an act, and completely petty and unwilling to reason or compromise with his last remaining family, he had them put under restraining orders. With some strings pulled from his time as General of the Zhuming, they were banned from stepping foot on the Luofu altogether.

  • Su Baoyu enjoyed his life in retirement as a socialite and a musician. He took up a new job at the Artisanship Commission, rising quickly among the ranks of the Artisans for his ability to tune out their creations with his precise hearing. However; he found himself bored of artisanship work, but decided to maintain it to continue to earn money. After all, this was mindless work compared to being the General.
    • He was still known as the former General of the Zhuming, and his retirement attitude and choices were met with violent backlash from his former compariots. He was delibrately dulling himself and wasting his talent. Baoyu, now secure with himself, was merely flippant to the claims and simply believed that for all his work as the General, he should at least enjoy his retirement. There was no longer need for him to be a sharp blade.
    • Baoyu had been known to throw many, many parties for the public and for private events. He simply just wanted to have fun and people enjoyed his parties as they were lively and he was a gracious host. The public enjoyed their brief experience of opulence in Baoyu's haven on the Luofu, and the rich and powerful enjoyed their private time in the grace of the former General of the Zhuming.
    • As a socialite, he was the craze for the rich folk on the Luofu. The man who singlehandedly dismantled and discredited the Song name and now lives off of their riches. Quite an interesting story to tell as well. Baoyu; however, does not openly share his past. He simply says that he was doing his civil duty as a citizen of the Xianzhou to fell their enemies. It just so happens that his own kin had ties to them. It was almost too convenient.
    • Baoyu did not need to do any real adjustment to his new life on the Luofu. He lived deliciously, glamorously. He threw parties once again for the promotions of lieutenants and corporals among the Luofu Cloud Knights, as well as threw lavish parties to celebrate the General's birthdays. Although these were harmless acts of goodwill, controversy still circled around Baoyu clinging onto old glory.
    • As an artisan, Baoyu enjoyed creating and tuning instruments and he greatly contributed to the cultural and musical traditions on the Luofu, even bringing his fire dances from the Zhuming to entertain his guests. In moments like these, people forget the controversies and rumors, and simply enjoy Baoyu's festivities.
    • Although he was legally a civillian now, his insight was still sought out by many.
      • General Jing Yuan as well as other current Arbiter Generals come to visit Baoyu at his haven to ask for his insight on certain matters, to hear a second opinion.
      • Master Diviner Fu Xuan, although a very decisive woman, asks Baoyu for his input on current matters and how to handle certain people.
      • Other affluent individuals on the Luofu, particularly celebrities invited to his parties, ask Baoyu how to maintain affluence.
    • In general, Baoyu had become an incredibly divisive individual on the Xianzhou Luofu, his popularity surrounding his supposed scandals and controversies are unending, but he views it as free exposure and advertising. The more people that come to his parties, the merrier.
    • Baoyu, in his retirement, had also become a standard of beauty on the Luofu, with him carrying himself in elegance and grace.
      • His fashion has become a fad for the rich. He is a trendsetter who popularized the use of fur in clothing.
      • His music and excitable fire dances have become popularized on the Luofu's entertainment sector.
      • The common people who want to appear rich wear furs and wear their hair in similar fashions as Baoyu.

  • For the past 16 years, although extremely short in relation to being a Xianzhou Native, Baoyu's life had been relatively peaceful. He had healed enough to raise a family of his own with Jing Yuan.
    • Their marriage 250 years ago stirred plenty of controversy, many of the rumors cricling around them concerning Baoyu and his clinging on to power now that he's a retired General. There were concerns that Baoyu's former acquaintanceship with Jing Yuan as Arbiter Generals had something to do with blackmail and forcing marriage onto him. This; however, was disproven by Jing Yuan himself.
    • Baoyu, for the most part of their relationship even in marriage, struggled with facing resurfaced century worth of familial trauma that had haunted him for most of his life and affected his life choices.
    • Although married for 250 years, they did not decide to have children until only 16 years ago, when baoyu decided he properly had ample time to heal from his struggles with familial trauma and learning how to let himself be loved in a healthy way. Currently, they have three children, all sired by Baoyu himself.
      • A son Xiaoli at 16 years.
      • A son Daji at 7 years.
      • A daughter Xingcai at 1 year.
    • Baoyu keeps his personal life as private as possible, so private that not even his personal attendants really know nor understand him behind closed doors. This is a remnant of his familial trauma, which he is working on.
    • His relationship with Jing Yuan was never intended to be public, but the marriage of two Generals was rather the talk of the town for a long time. They do their best to keep their relationship as private as possible, even going so far as to not be seen outside together.
