Having just moved to Trolberg, Tove finds herself amidst strange surroundings with all-the-more stranger people. Attending the Ahlberg Elementary School, she eventually meets up with Hilda, Frida and David, and gets roped into some of their adventures alongide the trio.

With Tove's half-troll heritage, she has some enhanced qualities; strength, stamina and night-vision - while also suffering from prolonged sun-exposure, and the sound of bells. Traversing these challenges can prove difficult at times, but with the help of her new friends, she'll get through anything!

An overarching mystery of Tove's heritage and inherent qualities comes up eventually - with the quartet (soon to be the Freaky Five with the inclusion of Louise) having to delve further into Troll-Country to search for answers and evidence alike. In their adventures they come across many-a-creature that have been mysteriously written out of any books... With someone- or something trying to stop their progress, the kids have to find new ways around the obstacles ahead.
