Though the Exploration Court didn't take him in until he was grown, Carto knew his calling from a young age. He had always been fascinated with maps and mapping, navigating and setting his neighborhood down on paper at age 7.
He also displayed a talent for management from an equally young age. Those expeditions were not conducted alone, after all. He wrangled the other neighborhood kids into helping him figure out the precise dimensions of blocks and parks and schools.
When he was grown, he applied immediately for membership in the Exploration Court.
It was exactly as he had hoped, save for those field missions where he had to get his hands dirty in forests, but he quickly acquired a managerial position in which he could spend his time with maps, rather than messy reality.
He climbed the ranks quickly, his managerial talent always outshining his sometimes abrasive personality. Eventually he became the manager of the entire court. Not the Lord, but the next best thing. Grandiose titles had never been his style, anyways.
Eventually he approved a ritual to bring into the world a new member of the court, truly native to it. This new member didn't quite meet his expectations. The two couldn't be more different, this new creation had no regard for mapping or organizing information, more interested in pure, pointless exploration. Needless to say, he and Path have clashed on any number of occasions.
