Fun fact: Velvet (old name - Valerie “Velvet” Fantina Arlot) was originally designed (by me, Grifuja) back in 2021 as a girl, a brown sheep with blonde, curly hair using Victorian dresses. Now he’s canonically trans and can go by any pronouns, although ”he/him” is the preferred option. More details under the spoiler toggle.
As I wrote Velvet’s story I felt trouble connecting with the design, because I didn’t have any digital/traditional art or design experience, so they looked nowhere close to what I envisioned. So I commissioned someone to work on a redesign for me.
This one artist (which I’m not going to expose here), delayed my commissioned arts for one year and a half, I had to pressure them many times, until she finally delivered a completely rushed and subpar piece. I was tired and sad and frustrated, and just wanted to be done with it, so I accepted the piece considering just giving the character away to the first person who claimed it.
After hearing my frustrations, my friend quickly redesigned the character while keeping the original essence — and it sparked me to reclaim this character, and develop him again. It unintentionally brought a whole new meaning to the character, and his transition is also symbolic to this.
So yeah, thank you so much, Mell, you can’t even imagine how happy it makes me.
