Spider Lily is a "demon". Demons, in her world called "Daimons", are reflections of the material plane and, therefore, exist within it. There are daimons that reflect the cruelty of the natural world and daimons that reflect its beauty. Daimons exist to spur on those natural forces and protect them. This means that some daimons make it their life's work to torture while others to nurture. The traditional idea of good and evil alignments is not so relevant.
