Made in God's image, Enzo is a perfect catholic. He never misses a single holiday, mass, or confession. His days revolve around his studies, rosaries, and his precious Steinway grand piano. Everything he does in his life is done to get him closer to God. So then why do his thoughts stray so far from His light? No matter how often he confesses or scrubs his flesh to the point of bleeding, he still finds it hard to meet the eyes of his reflection. It does not matter how hard he tries, he will always be a sinner. And God, does he want to sin.

Enzo is soft and emotional. He struggles voicing those emotions most time unless he is shrouded in the darkness of a confessional. There is one secret he refuses to share even with God. His homosexuality scares him. So much so, that he took a vow of celibacy and joined the priesthood to avoid his earthly temptations. The church was all he had after his parents returned to Italy. He was alone, left only with the guiding light of the cathedral. Even though they had tested him in the past, he promised that he would become better. He would become pure once more.

Detroit has been his home for most of his life. Still, he has no people he could truly call a friend. There are many that come to his church or invite him to dinner. They only care about him because of his connection to God. They don't know how sick he really is. If they did, they would abandon him in a heartbeat. This secret, more like curse, haunts Enzo daily. A constant reminder that no matter how much he gives up, he will always be the same little fag.

Enzo tries to see the good in everyone. From the scary criminal, to the sour politician. Everyone has some good in them. If he didn't believe in that, then what was the point of becoming a priest. His entire job was to bring out the good that lie inside people. Equal parts rewarding and exhausting, Enzo can't see himself doing anything differently. His job allows him to let his empathy for others rule him. They tell him the darkest parts of themselves and he gets to absolve them of their sins. What more could a man want? What better way to help everyone around him, even if it slowly kills him.

Creativity carries Enzo away from the struggles of his life. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a little personal time with his Steinway. There are some nights he plays until his fingers are bruised, and his feet stiff. The piano grants him an escape that nothing else in this world can. Except for maybe a cigarette, but he's trying to quit. His creativity doesn't just involve his love for the piano. It also shines in his inventive ways of helping others.

SUMMARY

While Enzo was born in Bologna, he was only a few months old when his parents moved to Detroit, New York. There they raised him with love and affection in a strictly Roman Catholic household. Being a good Catholic came naturally to him. So naturally, he was given the title Altar Boy at only seven years old. He made many discoveries as his time as an altar server. Some good, like his love for piano and helping those in his community. Conversely, some left him with physical and emotional scars that will never heal. Life cannot exist without suffering, or so the bible says.

After graduating at the top of his class, Enzo was able to fast track a Master's in Theology. At 23 he was able to study under his local priest and gain the needed hours to become a Deacon. He's only been a Deacon for a year, but it gives him a purpose to his otherwise mundane life. It allows him to have a schedule that distracts him from his otherwise haunting memories.

Childhood

After leaving Bologna, Enzo's family bought a nice townhouse in the upper east side. They lived a white picket fence life with their perfect nuclear family. He was an only child, and was certainly spoiled as such. As a child, he wanted for naught. He had all the toys, clothes, and latest tech he could want. So long as he kept up with his schoolwork and duties at church, he had the world. The only thing his parents couldn't provide him was a friend. Sure there was the occasional classmate who would invite him over, but most grew tired of his sensitive nature and too large imagination. Always picked last for sports and games, Enzo craved validation in any way. That's why when he was made an Altar Boy he felt more fulfilled than he ever had. At the time, it was the best thing to happen to him. Later, he would realize it was the worst.

His new position gave him a sense of purpose. Even as a child, he craved praise and validation. Enzo quickly realized being an Altar Boy was the perfect way to gain both. All the adults looked at him with pride in their eyes, particularly Father Cesario Albani. He took Enzo under his wing, preening him to be the perfect little Catholic boy. It only took a year for Father to start touching Enzo. It started with soft, featherlight touches while they practiced piano together. A hand on the knee, a brush of fingers as he reset Enzo's hands, it all meant nothing to Enzo. To him they were just accidental touches. To Father Albani, they were an invitation. Glancing touches turned to sitting in Father's lap which then turned to kising. "God is okay with Reverend Father kissing, it lets Father test the loyalty of his herd," Father Albani would whisper against Enzo's forehead. His skin would crawl, but he held strong. God was testing him, and he would pass.

For Enzo, the test never had an end. Father Albani always had an excuse for why what they did was okay under the watchful eyes of God, and Enzo believed him. How could someone with a direct line of communication to God not know everything? Even if what happened to him hurt. Even if he bled and cried. Even if he had to promise to never tell anyone or else God would punish him. Enzo knew he was being a good boy, and a good Catholic. Just like his parents wanted. He was so good. So then why did he feel so dirty?

Adulthood

Enzo's "relationship" with Father Albani continued well into his adulthood. Only stopping when he had to move to another city for university. No longer a naive boy, he knew what had happened to him. He just refused to believe it as the whole truth. He felt a relief he had never known before in those few short years he was away. So why then did a part of him still feel so lonely. He was a dirty, filthy man who missed Father Albani. His trauma had bonded him permanently to his abuser and he hated himself for it. Disgusting, disgusting, disgusting. The words rang through his head, a neverending assault from within.

Upon returning to Detroit, Enzo witnessed a horrifying sight. Father Albani was teaching a new boy piano. So, with self-loathing, Enzo asked Father Albani if they could pick up where they had left off. No more boys needed to be hurt, not when there was already a broken man willing to sacrifice himself. Father Albani denied his request, and Enzo lost it. He told the man that if he ever saw him talking to another child he would go to the police. Tell them everything he had done. Every scar he had left. It was the first and only time Enzo had ever thought to do something as dark as blackmail, but it was a necessary evil. Father Albani acted nonchalant, but Enzo could read him well after all these years. He was scared, but his words that no one would believe a freak like himself still sliced straight to his core. Still Father Albani, now the Bishop over Detroit, accepted his offer. So long as Enzo could still provide his body. "You're already a sick, ruined man. Nothing we do will get you further from heaven," Father Albani had whispered into Enzo's pinned ears. So once a month, Enzo provides himself to the Father. In exchange, the abuse ends with them.

Enzo De Palma carries himself like a shadow trying to blend in with those around him. He tries to melt into crowds rather than standout. The only time he has a true air of confidence is when he is helping at the cathedral. There he feels accepted, even with the dark memories that surround the building. People respect him, look up to him, and ask him for advice and he gives it all with kindness and enthusiasm. Once he leaves the large building though, he retreats back into himself.

He is always polite, and chooses kindness over confrontation. While reserved, he feels it is his duty to help those worse off than himself in Detroit.
