Backstory

Lunis never met his real parents. From an early age he was adopted by a family who worked in the horse racing industry, who needed some extra help with their horses. They were nice enough to Lunis, but they never really treated him like he was their son; he was always just their stable hand. They never even sent him to school, because he was making money by helping with their horses. Lunis didn't even really mind though, he liked working with the horses and school sounded boring.

When was 16, everything went awry. His adoptive family had a horse who wasn't doing well in the races. Furthermore, the horse was very difficult to handle. They wanted to sell the horse, but Lu was determined to train the horse. He spent long hours trying to train the horse, but nothing seemed to work. Time was running out for them, and so Lu tried something he had never tried before. Lunis had discovered a few years earlier that he had a gift. He could communicate with the horses that he worked with. In another lifetime, he could have used these powers to work for the government and further his ability, but since he had no formal education that was out of the question. Despite his lack of education, he knew that he needed to at least register himself as a person with abilities. Since he hadn't done that, using his powers to train the horse was technically illegal.

His parents eventually found out that he was using his powers to train the horse. They were furious with him because they assumed that he had been using his powers to train all their horses, and that their horses were only doing well because of this. If it got out that his family was cheating at the races, they could lose everything. They fired him from his position, told him to leave and never come back. Since he was already in trouble with the family, he decided he may as well just go all out. He stole the horse that he had been working with before he left for good. This was the first of many horses that Lunis would later steal.

Since he was having troubles finding a job, he took to stealing horses and then selling them off in other cities. Because of his ability to communicate with the animals, he was able to steal them without any troubles, and it always left him with enough money to sustain himself for a long time. He did this for nearly a year before he finally got caught. He was trying to steal a horse from a circus, but unfortunately for him, he did this right as someone came in to check on the horses. Lu tried to get away, but he was eventually caught. Rather than reporting him to authorities and arresting him, the ringmaster (and rightful owner of the horse he tried to steal) did something that shocked everyone: She offered him a job.

Lu accepted the position, because not only would it provide him with a place to stay, but it also allowed him to keep the horse that he had stolen from his family. He started training to become a trick rider, and also began working with his horse so that he could ride him in the circus performances. He quickly became a great trick rider, and often took on the most difficult tricks that most people were too afraid to try. He still uses his powers to communicate with the circus horses, but he often tries to justify it because he only does it to keep the horses and riders safe.

Personality

Lunis is very fearless, bold, and confident. All of these things make for a great trick rider, but one could argue that he's maybe a little too fearless. He often puts himself in danger by attempting dangerous stunts without a lot of practice or preparation. Despite all his recklessness, he's very aware that most people aren't comfortable attempting the things he does and never asks anyone to do anything that they're not comfortable with. He's very supportive and encouraging, especially towards his fellow trick riders.

Relationships With Other Characters

Solque: Lunis and Solque have a friendly rivalry going on. They constantly tease each other and sometimes argue over small things, but for the most part they get along and are actually pretty good friends. Solque actually tried to teach Lunis how to read and write at one point.

Jaire:  Since Jaire communicates by writing, and Lunis can't read, they don't really hang out one on one very often. Lunis tries to be friendly with him, mostly in the hopes that Jaire will feel comfortable enough to be able to talk to him. Sometimes he gets a bit frustrated with Jaire. He tries not to voice these frustrations, but Jaire still picks up on it, which makes him less comfortable around Lu.

Random Facts

  • His horse is named Major. Lu likes to tell people that it's short for "Major Pain in the Ass," especially when he's acting up.
  • Solque was the first one to start calling him "Lu."
  • People from the circus have caught him talking to the horses, but most of them just dismiss it, not realizing that the horses actually understand him.
