Born to Odeta within the swampland tribe of Tevitha, Liahra grew to be an inquisitive and intelligent young toskal. Taking up an interest in the local flora, she decides to research the plants beyond those of the tribe's borders during her Rite. Her mother encourages her daughter’s curiosity, preparing her as best she can for her journeys with food, tools, and a hand-woven research journal. Liahra sets out hopefully, documenting each new fungus and fern she encounters with unparalleled excitement.

Perhaps too eager, or maybe drawn in by its sweet scent and unassuming appearance, she draws too close to a particularly dangerous flower that is found where the Great Swamp and Jagged Tooth Jungle meet. As she illustrates what she names the Celestulsium - also known as “Star Weed” or “Twinkling Bells” - her eyes begin to water. If anyone were to witness, they’d assume that her puffy eyes, streaming tears, and blistering skin were some horrible allergic reaction. She can’t remember if her vision left before her consciousness did. After two weeks of nightmares and hazy memories of brief waking moments, Liahra finally returns to consciousness. She is home, sightless, and weak, but alive nonetheless. As she heals, the realization dawns that her eyesight will not be returning, and a different sort of bell enters her life in the form of the ones her mother wears from then on.
