Childhood
Mako was created in secret by Mortimer, the god of death and storms, as a last resort to defeat his twin brother Mariner, god of the sea life and waves. The god believed having a powerful sea monster under his command would guarantee him victory. Before his creation was fully complete, Mariner was able to subdue him. The large amount of power both gods used during their battle caused them to be greatly weakened, making their armies force them to flee the scene before more damage could be done. Thus, baby Mako was left abandoned. Somehow, he was able to fend for himself for some time before being discovered by a wandering family. They took care of him for some time before his dark secret was revealed. Horrified by his true nature, they forced him out of their home, once again leaving young Mako all alone. After that incident, another family found him and took him in, but soon did the same thing as his previous caretakers after seeing his monstrous side. These occurences took up most of Mako's childhood, causing him to be dubbed the "Beast of the Deep" by the public. Some families simply deserted him, while others tried to kill him. The burden of being this feared creature seemed to follow him wherever he went, causing him great sorrow. However, all of this seemed to change when he found a certain pirate crew...

Where do I even begin with Mako’s view of Cordelia? She’s his everything. She saved him from dying, showed him the beauty of the world, and helped him love himself. From the very moment he set his eyes on her, he thought she was the most beautiful woman he had ever seen. At first, he believed she would hate him for who he truly is, but as they got to know each other more, he began to doubt his own thoughts. He never felt as comfortable and safe around everyone except her. He was so surprised to see her seem so comfortable around him when she was infodumping about her interests to him. He loved hearing her stories and theories not just because of this, but because her voice and presence was so calming to him (also, he thought her theories were interesting). The more these feelings grew, the more love for her he felt. That’s why as soon as he heard she was kidnapped, he did not hesitate to transform into his sea monster form and attempt to save her. He didn’t care if he was badly injured or even killed, he NEEDED to keep her safe. Not just for himself, but for the world. He truly believed the world was a better place with her in it. When they talked after he woke up from his coma, he was compelled to tell her how grateful he was for her (not about his romantic feelings to her though bc he’s still too scared to do that). So, because of all I just said, y’all should understand why he was overjoyed to know she returned his romantic feelings. After hearing that, he grabbed her and kissed her passionately, not wanting to let go of her. He thought he was incapable of being loved, so he wanted to hold onto this feeling of being loved for as long as possible. He had the same thoughts at his wedding and Caspian’s birth.
