joy decided to ally with their fellow tadpole sufferers and avoid murderous impulses where they were concerned, initially because they just really wanted to watch someone turn into a mind flayer. but even though they're super inexperienced with the whole having friends thing, they've genuinely grown attached to their companions, and is willing to do a lot for them (the ones that didn't leave after they slaughtered an entire grove full of people, that is)
