A nerdy, depressed shark girl who spends most of her time alone in her bedroom. She enjoys listening to and collecting music, having amassed a decently sized collection of CDs from her local record shop. Struggling to find ways to express herself in person, she mostly socializes over the internet. She lives in an apartment with her mom, Aoi, with her father living overseas. Her shark plushie, which was given to her in her young teen years, brings her comfort and relieves her anxiety, and she brings it with her wherever she goes - usually carried in her backpack.
Gumi tends to be very socially awkward and tries to avoid social interactions as much as she can. Her eye contact is very poor and she stutters a lot while talking to strangers. Still, however, she is able to break out of her shell if someone approaches her and talks to her about things that she feels passionately about. Despite living her entire life in Japan, her English is pretty good, with most of it being picked up from interacting with people online and listening to music with English lyrics.
Due to some strange genetic mutation, her tail is made of gummy candy - tasting like gummy sharks. The tail is inexplicably able to regenerate, but Gumi dislikes it whenever anybody tries to eat it regardless. Unlike her mother, she also has gills on her sides, which allow for her to breath underwater. She isn't very strong, which, combined with her timid nature, makes her not much of a fighter.
