Aprium Aprium (Japanese: 梅子 Umeko) is the protagonist of Pokémon Scarlet. She is a student of Naranja Academy.

Story

Pre-Story

Aprium is a young woman who recently relocated to Cabo Poco from Porto Marinada with her parents. Having previously only been homeschooled privately, her parents, concerned about their daughter's limited social skills and reluctance to make friends, enrolled her in the nearest academy in the hopes of broadening her social horizons and encouraging her to experience life outside of home.

In the core series games

She leaves home to attend Naranja Academy in Mesagoza, the region's largest city. Aprium and her neighbor, a Champion-ranked Trainer named Nemona, encounter a curious Pokémon named Koraidon, as well as Arven, another academy student, who gives Aprium the Pokémon's Poké Ball on their way to the academy. In Mesagoza, Aprium rescues Penny from the harassment of academy troublemakers known as Team Star. Nemona entrusts her with a Tera Orb to harness the power of the Terastal phenomenon, and Professor Sada contacts her. The professor discloses that the Pokémon accompanying her once belonged to them and requests Aprium to look after it.

Aprium's arrival to Mesagoza coincides with the start of the academy's yearly independent study assignment, the "Treasure Hunt," which encourages academy students to travel Paldea in search of their own unique treasures. During the Treasure Hunt, Aprium follows Nemona's advice to challenge the eight Gyms around Paldea, assists Arven in defeating the five Titan Pokémon and collecting each of their Herba Mystica, and assists a mysterious individual calling themselves Cassiopeia in defeating Team Star's five squads at their respective bases.

After attaining the esteemed Champion Rank and besting Nemona at her peak strength, aiding Arven in healing his injured Mabosstiff through the power of Herba Mystica, and revealing Penny as the leader of Team Star, Aprium, along with her newfound friends Nemona, Arven, and Penny, respond to the Professor's summons to convene at Area Zero. While journeying through Area Zero en route to the Professor's laboratory, the quartet learns about Paradox Pokémon—creatures brought to the present era from a different time by the Professor's time machine, with Aprium's Koraidon being the inaugural representative of this phenomenon. Upon reaching the laboratory, Aprium makes a shocking revelation: the genuine Professor is deceased, and the entity she had been communicating with is merely a robotic replica. This artificial counterpart of the Professor aims to halt the time machine. With the support of her Koraidon, Aprium successfully overcomes the time machine's defenses. However, the robotic Professor, unable to prevent the time machine's operation, resorts to using it to transport itself to another era in a last-ditch effort to bring an end to its functionality.

After her journey at Area Zero, Aprium participates in the Academy Ace Tournament, which is held to honor her new Champion title. She triumphs, formally establishing herself as the academy's most formidable Trainer.

Teal Mask

Jacq reaches out to Aprium, sharing the news that she, along with three other students, have been selected for a journey to the distant land of Kitakami in the east. Guiding this group of academy students is Briar, a teacher hailing from Blueberry Academy in Unova. Briar introduces herself to Aprium, unveiling her lineage as a descendant of Heath and revealing an unedited manuscript of the Scarlet BookS/Violet BookV authored by him. This manuscript mentions a Pokémon named Terapagos, and Briar aims to locate it to restore Heath's tarnished reputation.

With all chosen students assembled, the expedition to Kitakami commences. Upon reaching the foreign land, Aprium heads to Mossui Town, where she encounters Carmine and Kieran, local siblings and fellow students from Blueberry Academy. Settling down at the local community center, the students are assigned the task of forming pairs and exploring Kitakami to uncover the tales described on three signboards. At Carmine's suggestion, Aprium pairs up with Kieran and delves into the first two signboard stories, centered around the trio of Pokémon known as the Loyal Three and an ogre they valiantly fought against years ago.

Aprium and Kieran postpone the search for the final signboard until the next day to partake in the Festival of Masks, a yearly celebration honoring the Loyal Three. During the festivities, Aprium and Carmine unexpectedly encounter the ogre, Ogerpon, who accidentally drops her Teal Mask. Carmine opts to keep this encounter a secret from her brother for the time being. The following day, Aprium shows the mask to Carmine's grandfather, unveiling the true story of Ogerpon and the Loyal Three.

Leaving the chipped Teal Mask for repairs, Aprium, unaware of Kieran's eavesdropping, sets out with him to locate the last signboard. Upon returning to Mossui Town, Aprium and Carmine discover that Kieran has stolen the Teal Mask. Pursuing him to Loyalty Plaza, Kieran accuses Aprium and Carmine of treating him akin to how the townspeople mistreated Ogerpon in the past. In a fit of rage, Kieran challenges Aprium to a battle over the mask. Following his defeat, Kieran strikes the Loyal Three Monument, triggering an unforeseen burst of light that inexplicably resurrects the Loyal Three.

The empowered Loyal Three head to Kitakami Hall, where the townspeople unwittingly hand over the masks and feed the Pokémon mochi, enhancing their size and power. Aprium and Carmine intervene to save Ogerpon from the Loyal Three. They succeed in defeating the trio, retrieving Ogerpon's masks. Kieran, having convinced the townspeople of the truth, clears Ogerpon's name. Aprium, Carmine, and Kieran accompany Ogerpon back to her home. However, Kieran, desiring to be Ogerpon's partner, challenges Aprium to a battle over her. After overcoming Kieran, Aprium battles Ogerpon with all her masks and successfully captures her. Distraught, Kieran retreats and locks himself in his room. Following a final battle with Carmine, Aprium learns that Briar, Carmine, and Kieran are returning to Blueberry Academy early due to developments involving the Great Crater of Paldea. Despite the circumstances, Carmine invites Aprium to visit them again in the future.

Character

Aprium is a reserved and intellectually inclined young woman who prefers immersing herself in her studies rather than pursuing social connections. She often becomes absorbed in her own interests, showing a reluctance to engage in activities unrelated to her academic pursuits. Her limited experience with friendship has led to her sometimes appearing aloof and dismissive, unintentionally giving off an unfriendly aura, particularly when dealing with people she doesn't find intriguing. However, following the events of the story, she has become more receptive to the idea of socializing, having formed a few meaningful friendships of her own.

She is a prodigious child with an enduring passion for history that dates back to her early years. Her living spaces, both at home and in her dorm, are brimming with history books and educational materials. Aprium takes immense pride in her extensive knowledge of historical subjects, displaying an insatiable thirst for learning, occasionally venturing into reckless or questionable endeavors in the pursuit of her studies. While her enthusiasm encompasses a wide range of historical topics, her primary focus remains on the history of Sinnoh.

Apriums' starter Pokémon, her Sprigatito, was initially overlooked due to a lack of interest in the available options when presented with the 3 starter pokemon. However, with Nemona's enthusiastic assistance, Aprium ultimately chose this affectionate Pokémon. Despite Aprium's initial reservations, the needy creature managed to carve a special place in her heart, reveling in being spoiled and forming a strong, clingy bond with its trainer.

Raised from a Tinkatink, Sterling, a pampered member of the team, thrives on Aprium's care. She frequently stays outside her pokeball, remaining by her trainer's side. Possessing a jealous nature, Sterling becomes standoffish with both team members and people when she observes her trainer interacting with them.

A seasoned and formidable Lucario, hailing from Sinnoh, found its way to Paldea after its previous trainer struggled to command its stubborn nature. Frustrated, the trainer traded it to Aprium. Mickey often clashes with Aprium and fellow party members, behaving as if he has no trainer. Their bond, however, begins to solidify through intense Pokémon battles, Aprium gradually earning Mickey's trust.

Captured en route to Los Platos, this Wooper has been a steadfast member of Aprium's team for almost as long as her starter. Frequently found lounging around, Aprium indulges his leisure, charmed by his undeniable cuteness.

Raised from a Sirskit, this Pokémon brings Aprium comfort as it is also the cherished companion of both her fathers. Often found resting on Aprium's shoulder, it keeps her company during study sessions.

Aprium felt a peculiar connection with this Froslass, prompting the desire to capture and include it on the journey. Obi, a sophisticated Pokemon, tends to keep to herself, not engaging much with teammates. Interestingly, Obi also seems to share a resonance with Aprium, frequently staying close to her when outside her Pokeball.

Other Pokemon

Initially, Aprium harbored deep unease and disdain toward Koraidon, driven by an ingrained fear of dragon types rooted in her childhood. The mere thought of having it as a companion perturbed her significantly, causing her to resist using Koraidon as a ride Pokemon during the early stages of her journey, needlessly complicating her adventures. Over time, despite Aprium's initial reluctance, Koraidon's persistent presence wore down her resistance, leading to a gradual development of trust and affection towards the once-disliked dragon. As the story unfolds, Aprium not only comes to appreciate Koraidon as a valuable companion but also develops a newfound interest in the Pokemon's historical significance, recognizing it as a creature from the past.

Though not her own Pokémon, Aprium devoted considerable time to caring for it. Fueled by her passion for historical topics and captivated by the unexpected sight of this peculiar and rare Pokémon, she impulsively scooped up the Zorua. This impromptu action temporarily separated the Pokémon from its trainer, allowing Aprium to thoroughly examine it and delve into her research.

Following the storyline, Aprium acquires Clementine as a new teammate. While exploring Area Zero, this distinctively colored paradox Pokemon captures her attention, prompting her to add it to her team. Through devoted training and care, this Pokemon evolves into a formidable and cherished member of her lineup.

Their journey fosters a profound transformation in their relationship, evolving into a playful and sibling-like bond marked by shared camaraderie and a growing mutual understanding over the care of their pokemon.
