MARIAM ASLAN
"And the next life is certainly far better for you than this one."
93:11 الضحى
Mariam was drawn in by the outlaw appeal of the Van der Linde gang in 1891 as she wanted to pay off a debt she owed Dutch. Born in the wilds of Gaziantep in 1875, her roots led back to a small village where Zehra and Cem Aslan brought her into the world. When the family moved to Lemoyne, Saint Denis, their fortunes changed dramatically. Mariam's mother died giving birth to her brother, Nazir Aslan, when she was only six years old. Her father's once harsh discipline gave way to neglect, with the arrival of a long-awaited son occupying his attention. Mariam faced the grim reality of being forced into marriage by her father in 1889, when she was 14. Fueled by a desire for freedom, she set out on an escape with Jim Wright, a former flame. They wandered the gritty streets together, Mariam navigating a precarious existence and Jim succumbing to the vices of alcohol and debt collection. Fate intervened when, at the age of 16, she met Dutch, who had purchased something of hers from Jim. In an attempt to reclaim what was rightfully hers, Mariam made the fateful decision to join the gang, entwining her fate with the notorious Van der Linde gang.

BACKSTORY
Mariam found solace and acceptance in her grandmother's embrace early in her life. Mariam, the family's only daughter, was met with disapproval from her father, who saw her gender as a source of shame. Despite this familial disapproval, her mother stood out as a beacon of kindness, ensuring Mariam's education of reading and writing, which her father dismissed as foolish. Fortune smiled upon the family when her father got lucky, traveled to the United States to expand his trading business. However, the American dream was not without cost. Mariam's mother, overwhelmed by the complexities of childbirth, gave birth to Nazir. The moment marked a turning point in Mariam's life, as her father shifted his focus solely to shaping Nazir to be a suitable heir to his succeeding business. Mariam's mother had died as a result of childbirth. She was left to deal with both grief and the daunting responsibility of raising her brother, Nazir, on her own. Growing up in the vibrant chaos of Saint Denis, Mariam was surrounded by other immigrants pursuing elusive dreams in the land of opportunity. The language barrier initially silenced her, and she spent her first years in the United States without speaking a word of English. Despite the difficulties, she took it upon herself to instill values in her younger brother, Nazir, that would prevent him from following the destructive path that their father had set. As Mariam approached adolescence, the threat of an unwanted marriage drove her to flee with Jim Wright, the man she loved. They embarked on a journey into the unknown, confronting the harsh reality of survival, with Mariam working on the streets, enduring a life of hardship and sorrow. Jim's heartless sale of her mother's prized jewelry marked the breaking point and let loose a cascade of repressed feelings. She felt all of the hurt, rage, and betrayal that had built up over the years explode inside of her. When things came to a head, Mariam took matters into her own hands and dealt a quick and lethal justice to Jim and the persistent debt collector who had been after them.
Eight years passed, bringing Mariam to the brink of the Blackwater massacre. As the fateful events approached, Mariam, guided by a growing sense of dread, expressed her concerns to Dutch. In a moment of genuine concern, she expressed her concerns, warning against the direction they were about to take. Unfortunately, her words went unheard, as Dutch remained firm in his beliefs, unaffected by the concerning advisories. As the Blackwater massacre unfolded, Mariam found herself caught up in a knife fight, a desperate struggle for survival in the midst of chaos. In the heat of the confrontation, she encountered a dangerous situation that nearly cost her an eye. The scars on her face from that harrowing encounter served as a constant reminder of the blood price paid on that fateful day. Mariam's injury was a devastating blow to her self-esteem. The external mark mirrored the internal wounds caused by the loss of beloved gang members, exacerbating her emotional burden. In the aftermath of Blackwater, Mariam struggled with the haunting consequences of her decisions, which were marked not only by scars on her face but also by the weight of the losses she had suffered. Mariam found herself in a gloomy solitude within Colter's harsh beginnings. Consumed by inner turmoil, she struggled with feeding herself, the burden of her thoughts obscuring the simple act of a meal. She avoided being around other gang members and retreated into her own solitude. The only company was Florence, who provided some comfort. Mariam would long for a break from the cramped confines of the camp. She begged Dutch, desperate for any chance to get away from the creeping insanity of camp life, to join along any mission, but all she got was dismissive indifference. Mariam struggled to become the upbeat person she used to be in the first few chapters. For some reason, she can't help but feel like she is the same six-year-old little girl, helpless to it all.
