❝ Anything I can help you with? ❞
Scarlet was born and raised in one of the more heavily populated Octarian domes. Nowadays, however, she resides on the surface, working in weapons repair and updates to fit league regulations. While her arrival to the surface was in chaos, as she'd been attacked and permanently wounded by her sister for the crime of haboring a fugitive, she's found her stride, having a good apartment, a job she loves, and a social circle she trusts. She's frequently looking after her coworkers and friends, always supporting them and keeping an eye out for them, and is thus known for her reputation as someone always ready to protect the people she loves. She's not eager to talk about her past, especially anything regarding her history as an elite soldier in the Octarian military, but Inklings tend not to realize, and the Octolings that do know better than to ask. She's currently living in Inkopolis, in her apartment she rents alone.

  • Prior to Octolings returning to the surface, Scarlet went to great lengths to hide any and all Octoling traits of hers. Now that they've returned, she's loosened up a bit
  • Her color of choice isn't just a holdover from her time in the military, rather being a traditional family color of hers
  • She can still see out of her injured eye, albeit not very well. Her depth perception is pretty poor as a result
  • She views her coworkers as family, and is known for taking on the most difficult customers in the shop to prevent her less experienced coworkers from having to deal with them

  • She rarely plays Turf War, nor competitive matches as a whole
  • While .52 Gal is her most used weapon, she's also very fond of Rollers and Blasters
  • She personally updates her weapon the moment she's allowed to, as she doesn't trust anyone else to handle her weaponry like she does

EARLY LIFE
Scarlet was born and raised in one of the bigger Octarian dome cities, to a family of high reputation and ranking, both of her parents being high ranking elites in the Octarian military, albeit in non-combat positions. Being the oldest to her two sisters, and her parents still busy with their positions, Scarlet was defaulted to being the caretaker from a young age, a position she took in stride and with great joy. As such, she was very close with both Crimson and Ruby, with them being two and six years younger respectively.

When not looking after her sisters, Scarlet would study, getting consistently high grades and good performances. She wanted both to be a role model for her sisters, always on call to help them out with classwork when they needed it, while also wanting to live up to the legacy her parents set before her. In spite of all of the stresses and expectations put upon her by the people around her, she was known for her level head and ability to rise to the occasion whenever asked.

It was through this work ethic and consistently good grades through the years that she was offered the position of her dreams, to follow an apprenticeship into weapons engineering. She'd already taken a few premilinary classes on the subject, and would tinker with whatever weaponry the schools had with the little free time she had, so her talent and passion being noticed was everything she wanted. However, pursuing weapons engineering would mean not only full time military enlistment, but being relocated into one of the domes with higher ranked military activity, away from her family. As much as she wanted to follow her dreams, the guilt of leaving her family, especially her sisters, behind, weighed too heavy on her, and ended with her opting to turn down the chance, and continue her schooling as just a basic soldier with no real speciality, albeit still within the elite program.

MILITARY ENLISTMENT
Tape1Queperly.png
Splat2BackgroundQueperly.jpg

Following her decision to not take up weapons engineering, Scarlet graduated as an elite, and was positioned in the same dome she lived on, albeit on the very outskirts, guarding and patrolling where the exit to the surface was supposedly available. Given how her promotion from regular soldier to elite gave her more years of training, she managed to line up her own graduation with Crimson, who'd just become a regular soldier, and had managed to convince her superior to put Crimson on her squad, allowing them to be together in their position. While their outpost was in a miserable place, being in the middle of nowhere, with little connection to the rest of the domes, she was just happy she got to be with her sister, and even got to stay in decently regular touch with Ruby, as she and Crimson would write and recieve letters in return from her, letting them still be connected in some form.

However, the years would grow long. She'd always be told how they were at war, that their outpost served a vital job of making sure invading Inkling forces would be stopped, and yet, nothing ever happened. The worst that she'd ever see was the occasional nudibranch that'd wandered too far, and never once the supposed invading force that was clamoring to get in. Instead, the time simply weighed on her, though she'd never express this to her squad, knowing they needed her as a strong leader, and not the tired, jaded person she could feel herself becoming.

Several years into her enlistment, while out on her usual nightly patrol, a duty she took so she could clear her head and prevent the others from having to stay up as late, she'd found her first ever sign of someone other than her squadmates there in the outskirts. Expecting another nudibranch, she'd instead be caught off guard, having stumbled upon a teenage girl, and a runaway at that. She approached with a cautious hostility, ordering for the girl to show herself, yet never actually drawing her weapon. To her horror, she quickly realized she recognized the teen, being that of May, the best friend of her little sister. While Scarlet and May had never really interacted much, having only met sparsely before Scarlet's full enlistment, she'd still heard a lot about her from the letters Ruby would send, and knew something serious had to have happened to have caused her to be in this situation.

Scarlet knew her duty was to turn her in, she'd heard the radios about the runaways a few months prior, but looking at May, and seeing a scared, hungry child, in desperate need of help, she couldn't bring herself to do it. Instead, making sure to remove her goggles so that May could recognize her, and approaching slowly and carefully, she told her that she wasn't going to turn her in, and that she just wanted to talk. While hesistant, May gave in, having spent the past several months on the run, and desperate for even the slightest bit of safety that Scarlet could provide. Scarlet, while not saying it, was also desperate for someone to talk to, someone who she didn't have to be a soldier around. Seeing how thin and gaunt May was, once Scarlet knew she had to return to her outpost before people would notice, she told May to come back the next night, same time, same place, just for another chat, all for the purpose of giving her the nightly rations intended for herself.

Bringing her rations for the night to the meetup with May, the two continued to talk, with May hesitant to actually talk about what happened and why she's on the run. Scarlet tried to get her to open up a bit more, only to be met with more uncomfortable avoidance and question dodging. However, things would change when she noticed May only just barely picking at her food. It's with horror that Scarlet realizes it's May that's the runaway known to have a young child with them, and that her refusal to eat more than few bites is her trying to save some for a child back wherever she's camped. Finally unable to hide the truth anymore, May would admit everything, telling Scarlet about how she'd been planning to run away with a friend of hers, that it all fell through, and that she realized she could never leave her little sister behind while chasing a better life for herself, once again begging Scarlet not to turn her in.

Having once again been met with the desperate pleading of a child in need, Scarlet couldn't bring herself to do what was expected of her, deciding she couldn't turn in May, regardless of the illegality of her actions. Worst of all, as May recounted her desires to leave, Scarlet found herself uncomfortably close to how she was feeling. She wasn't happy in the domes anymore, she hadn't been for years, and having May so succinctly say everything she'd been feeling for so long felt just as cathartic as it was terrifying. Instead, she told May to come back the next night, that they'd meet again. Unwilling to turn her in, Scarlet had decided she'd do everything in her power to protect them, and keep them safe in any way she could. From that point forward, their meetings became regular, with Scarlet taking more and more rations from her outpost in order to make sure both May and her sister, June, would be fed, even if May never brought June with her. The two would find solace in each other, May having someone to actually talk to about her situation, and Scarlet finally feeling like there was someone in the world who understood the growing displeasure she'd had over Octarian life and the domes as a whole

DESERTION

Unbeknownst to her, Scarlet was not the only person becoming more and more discontent with the way things were, though, for different reasons. While Crimson and Scarlet were close, the communication between them became less and less honest through the years, with Scarlet feeling as though she couldn't share her burdens with Crimson, and Crimson feeling like a failure in comparison to her, but not wanting to open up, knowing it wasn't Scarlet's fault she was struggling. She routinely performed worse than her in school and training, and would face instructors who'd grown used to Scarlet's overachieving, angry and disappointed she wasn't living up to the expectation Scarlet had set. Things had only gotten worse when Scarlet turned down the offer to become a weapons engineering apprentice, as not only did Crimson feel responsible for her giving up on her dreams, as she'd been unable to score high enough to apply for the programs, but would then have to hear the lamenting of the adults in their life, of how Scarlet had such talent but gave it all up. Unwilling to talk to her about how she'd been feeling, however, Crimson held onto her frustrations and her feelings of inferiority, things smoothing out over their years in the outpost together, for the most part.

However, Crimson took notice of Scarlet's more and more frequent disappearances, leaving earlier and staying out later, and the way she never answered where she'd gone beyond just simply saying it was another patrol. When rations started to go missing, and Scarlet, normally always ready to solve whatever issues the squad was happening, was dismissive and refusing to look into it beyond just claiming a stray nudibranch got in, Crimson grew increasingly suspicious. Finally deciding she had enough, Crimson decided to track where she'd go each night, to find out what she was hiding from her.

Crimson left before Scarlet did, following the tracks she'd left from her previous trips. It's there that she would find the evidence of Scarlet's betrayal, May, having grown used to their meetings, waiting once again in their normal spot. It'd only be a few minutes later that she'd catchescarlet red handed, showing up with extra rations in hand, freely and openly interacting with and sheltering a fugitive. Jumping out from where she was hiding, Crimson demanded to know what was going on, why Scarlet was aiding this criminal, why she'd hide this from her. Scarlet tried to explain, to reason with her, but Crimson wasn't looking for any actual justification. Instead, she gave her a simple offer, hand over the fugitive, and Crimson will look the other way and pretend this never happened, or turn herself in as a traitor to the Octarian military.

Scarlet wanted so desperately for Crimson to see reason, to understand that May wasn't a threat nor a criminal, just a scared, lost teen in search of a better life, but Crimson wouldn't see it. To her, all that mattered was that Scarlet had to choose between her family, and protecting a girl she barely knew. Regardless of how much she loved Crimson, and how much she wanted to be there for her family, Scarlet couldn't do it. She couldn't willingly hand in this child to be arrested. She only gets halfway through her saddened declaration of protection for May when Crimson attacks her. Having already pulled out a pocket knife she carried with her when she'd seen May in the first place, the realization that Scarlet was choosing to, in her eyes, abandon her family and her people, caused her to lunge at her, aiming to hurt. Scarlet was expecting a poor reaction, for a screaming match, for an arrest, maybe even a scuffle, but she what she wasn't expecting was the sheer level of violence Crimson resorted to.

Genuinely afraid Crimson might kill her, and in sheer panic and self defense, Scarlet managed to draw her weapon, managing to get off a good enough shot to get Crimson off of her, having previously been entirely pinned down, and just barely managing to keep the knife away from her face and causing more damage than it already had. Knowing that she's now a traitor to the Octarian military, and having just physically attacked her own sister, even if in self defense, Scarlet knew she couldn't stay, instead bolting the moment she got out from underneath Crimson, trying to get as far away as possible. She would run for as long as she can until she physically couldn't anymore, finally having to assess the damage that was done. She'd managed to stop Crimson from doing much more damage than her initial attack had done, but she'd still done a lot, and, using the little first aid she could perform with what few supplies she'd had on her, Scarlet would try her best to patch herself up, only really being able to use a few sparse alchohol wipes to clean the wounds. With nowhere left to go, knowing Crimson would go back to her squad and report everything that happened, Scarlet would resolve herself to get to the surface, the only place she could see herself actually being safe.

LIFE ON THE SURFACE
Tape1Queperly.png
Splat2BackgroundQueperly.jpg

Thanks to spending so long patrolling the same areas, while she wasn't completely sure where the exit to the surface is, she had a good idea where to start looking. Within only two weeks after running off, she'd managed to find the way out, making it to the surface and seeing the sun for the first time in her life. Deeply fearful of being caught and outed as an Octarian soldier, Scarlet would try her best to avoid residents of the city she'd found herself in, and when forced to, she'd do everything in her power to hide her identity as much as she could. The first course of action she would have to take would be finding new clothes, her armor being of distinctly Octarian make. Despite her wounds from the attack worsening with time, as the time it took for her to make it to the surface and lack of medical supplies would end up with her unable to prevent an infection from taking hold, she'd refused to seek medical care until she had something other than just her armor to wear.

Desperate and with no idea where to go, she'd linger the outskirts of events, looking for any chance she could get to look less suspicious, less like an outsider, and her chance would come via a booth she'd spotted handing out themed t-shirts to Inkling children. While she'd prided herself for so long on her following of rules, of never committing wrongdoings, she'd grown completely desperate, without new clothing she could never get the help she needed, she could never start trying to build her life there, so as much as it agonized her, quitely, she'd sneak in behind someone else signing up for whatever event was ungoing, grab a shirt discretely, and leave before anyone noticed.

Now with something to wear other than her armor, and in agonizing pain from her still untreated wound, Scarlet would finally find herself at the nearest Inkling emergency room, desperately hoping they wouldn't out her right then and there. To her relief, while things wouldn't be easy, as she was unable to fully communicate with medical staff, as what little Inklish elite Octarians were made to learn in school was dated, and incredibly bare bones, it was enough to get her through, and while the nurses on staff would be curious over what could've caused her wounds, and why she hadn't sought care before it was as bad as it was, she wouldn't be forced to reveal anything she didn't want to.

With new clothing, and starting to finally get medical care for her injuries, her next goal would be to secure any form of housing. She'd been sleeping wherever she could find it safest for the entire duration between running away and seeking medical attention, but if she was going to live on the surface, she knew she'd need to start properly living there. With that, she'd pawn off her armor to the first person that'd take it, claiming it as a Great Turf War antique, and getting a decent chunk of Inkling currency for her troubles, allowing her to afford rent for the cheapest apartment she could find for the time being, and start looking for a job to sustain herself.

While she managed to land on her feet, finding herself basic jobs while she became more familiar with the language and culture, the guilt of everything continued to loom over her, of attacking Crimson, of abandoning Ruby, and of leaving without ever even trying to find May. Once the altercation between her and Crimson broke out, May had bolted, and Scarlet was in too rough of shape to try tracking her afterwards, instead forced to leave without ever knowing what happened to her and June. Instead, she'd have to keep living her life on the surface, with the hope that May survived and made it out still there.

Therefore, when, a year and a few months after making it to the surface, she'd be approached in an Inkopolis grocery store while running errands by a now young adult May and young teenage June, she was overwhelmed and overjoyed to see her well and alive. Her guilt now somewhat eased, she and May were able to exchange numbers to stay in touch, as the only two Octolings they knew of on the surface, and therefore, the only two people they could actually talk to about their experiences together.

As she got more used to living on the surface, Scarlet got more and more comfortable as her life finally started to stabilize. She'd get her big break, however, when her application into a local weapons repair shop would be accepted. Her already existing knowledge of weaponry and deep passion for the craft would get her brought on board, finally getting the chance to live out the dreams she'd given up on as a kid. With her prior experience in the Octarian military, levelheaded nature, and near instant adopting of her coworkers as her family would have her rise the ranks quickly, and becoming the unofficial second in command to the shop in the span of just over a year. With a stable job she loved, a community to be around, and another Octoling to be able to be herself around, she'd settle into her life on the surface happily.

Spoilers!!

While she settled in well to her life on the surface, Scarlet always remained rather touchy about her history, and prior to the mass return of Octolings to the surface, going to decent lengths to hide her Octoling features. Always keeping her tentacles pulled up, always keeping her ears covered, and always hoping that her visibly injured eye would draw people away from noticing her mask and eye shape looking nothing like the typical Inkling. Even after Octolings return, while she is able to be more comfortable in her presentation of herself, with her coworkers and social circle quietly realizing that she must be an Octoling, she's still not eager to talk about her history. Luckily for her, most Octolings understand, they themselves typically being ex-military, and not asking questions, with the ones who do, backing off after seeing her discomfort.

The return of the Octolings means a lot for Scarlet, in every facet of her life. She's overjoyed to know that her people are being allowed freedom to the surface again, to find the good life she was able to get, but the return also means a lot of new players who need updated weaponry, so she becomes entirely swamped in work. She doesn't mind, however, as work serves as an important distraction. With the return of Octolings, and the illegality of being on the surface entirely dissolved, she knows that she now has the chance to contact her family again, who she hasn't seen in over half a decade. She wants to reach out to them, to tell them she's alive, to tell them she misses and loves them, that she wants to see them again, but she doesn't even know where to start, if they'd even pick up. So instead, she keeps working.

Scarlet's not the only one dealing with the aftermath of the return either, however, as her and May go out for lunch one day to discuss it. They'd discussed her past in the military plenty, and of how Scarlet had heard about the runaway fugitives before she even knew that May was one of them, and she wants to know if Scarlet has any idea where the other runaway, Jake, had possibly gone. He'd been missing for years, only to resurface suddenly alongsside the other Octolings, except with no memory of his time in hiding, and, more worryingly, seemingly both unable to remember, yet unable to forget someone May knows he didn't know before then, named Parker. Scarlet's unable to help, however, as all she'd heard was that there were two runaways, one with a child, and not much else. She tells her she'll keep it in mind, though, and she'll call if she learns anything.

While disappointed she's unable to help further, Scarlet has a job to do, and gets back to work as she always does. It's another client, however, who reignites the hunt for the missing woman May is looking for. While working as usual, an Octoling she had never met before asks if she, by any chance, is the military deserter from back in the day, Scarlet. While her desertion was a big deal when it happened, bigger scandals had happened both before and after, and no one had ever called her out by name before, and thus, she's deeply uncomfortable with this, denying it and trying to back out of the conversation as politely as possible. After continuing to ask more and more personal questions, the client finally realizes how she's pushing Scarlet into a corner and that she's clearly upsetting her, and decides to drop the topic. Saying she'll drop the topic, she just explains that it was a close friend of hers that she lost many years ago, who she thinks ran away because of Scarlet, in passing, mentioning her name, Parker.

Instantly recognizing the name as the woman May was looking for, Scarlet stops the client from leaving, instead telling her to come back in an hour, when it's her lunch break, and that they'll go out to a place nearby so they can talk. Introducing herself as Tess, she's very excited to get a chance to actually talk with Scarlet. At their lunch, they're able to properly discuss how their significance to each other is, with Tess explaining that it was news of Scarlet's desertion that she believes inspires Parker to desert herself, and Scarlet telling her that Parker is the name of someone a friend of hers is currently looking for, but has no idea where to start. Tess, while hesitant, gives Scarlet the direct coordinates to where Parker had been living post-desertion, an abandoned broom closet in the deepest depths of the domes, though she makes sure to tell Scarlet that she believes fully that Parker died years ago, and that she doesn't want to hear about their hunt for her, knowing it'll just result in having to reopen wounds again and confirm that her friend really is dead. The two go their seperate ways afterwards, though Scarlet says she'll make sure to keep in touch, even if not about the missing persons case.

Having given May the information on where to find Parker's old living spaces, Scarlet once again goes back to work. The stress of everything is finally starting to get with her, with work only ramping up, and the investigation May is conducting trying to find Parker only weighing harder on her, despite the fact she's not really invovled. It's during work one day, however, that she gets a call from May. May knows her work hours generally, but also knows not to call during work unless it's an emergency, and despite Scarlet initially ignoring her call, May calls repeatedly. This worries Scarlet, and convinces her to take her break early and answer her call. It's then that Scarlet is told the news, that while down in the domes looking for Parker, May had found Crimson, half sanitized, and that she was currently at a local Inkopolis hospital. She yells for her coworker in the breakroom to tell their boss that she won't be back due to a family emergency, and rushes off to get to the hospital as fast as she can.

Crimson is still alive, and her reports are good, unless there's some form of major reaction, she's going to survive what happened to her, albeit not unscarred. She's unable to talk, however, and wouldn't be able to for at least the coming week. Scarlet doesn't even know how to approach the situation. The last she saw of Crimson was her violent outburst, but she's spent the last several years desperately wishing she could see her even one more time. So, Scarlet makes her move. She tells Crimson that once she's able to properly communicate, whatever she tells Scarlet to do, she'll do. If she never wants to see her again, Scarlet will disappear from her life entirely. Until she can do that, however, she's going to support her in every way she can, and stay at her bedside as long as it takes until she's well enough to communicate what she actually wants. Crimson tries to fight back against this, but is entirely unable, too tired to communicate via body language, and her throat too burned from the acidic sanitization to speak. Instead, she just lays there, and lets Scarlet sit with her.

Crimson wants so badly to be mad at her, and for a while, she is, she's enraged that Scarlet thinks she can just let herself back into her life, after everything she did. To an extent, Scarlet understands and agrees with that, she knows what she's doing is selfish, she knows that Crimson doesn't want to see her ever again, but she stays anyways, in the desperate hope that she's wrong. She's there constantly, only leaving to occasionally stop by the hospital cafeteria, or to meet with coworkers or May checking in on her. She also talks to Crimson, telling her what her lifes been like when she was gone, and telling her how sorry she is and how deeply she regrets everything that happened between them. Whether or not Crimson deserves apology, she couldn't care less, she just wants her sister back, even just temporarily.

Having planned to cuss her out when she finally was able to speak again, Crimson wants desperately to follow through on this, to let Scarlet know how badly she hurt her, but she just can't. Having watched how dedicated Scarlet was to staying by her side and making sure she was getting the best care, to keep her company, to make sure she knew how much she was loved and missed, she can't handle the idea of losing Scarlet again. Instead, after years of simmering in her own rage, of letting her anger drive her to her own destruction, she finally realizes how wrong she was. That she was wrong from the beginning and that in spite of that, Scarlet is still here for her anyways. There's still a part of her that's mad, but she wants nothing more in the world than to just have her older sister back despite everything she did to keep her away, and so, after finally being able to speak again, she tells her exactly that.

With Crimson back in her life, Scarlet helps her continue with ther recovery, including inviting her to move in with her until she's able to be on her own, an offer Crimson takes her up on. With Crimson now being both forgiven by Scarlet, and forgiving Scarlet herself, Crimson is able to get her back in contact with their parents, and while their relationship is never the same, always having an uncomfortable strain on it from years of anger and resentment, they're at least able to talk again. A similar thing happens with Ruby, with Ruby never being entirely close with either of her older sisters, as after Scarlet seemingly abandoned them, Crimson's letters to her stopped shortly after, with her entirely disappearing without anyone noticing later on, and therefore the relationship between them atrophying as well, they're able to all at least gain some form of bond back, being able to stay in contact even as Ruby continues to live in the domes. With her life finally settling down, Scarlet is able to continue working the job that she loves, gets to be with her sisters again, and is finally free from the overwhelming guilt she'd been carrying on her shoulders ever since her desertion.

Younger Sister
Scarlet's younger sister by two years, her and Crimson grew up very close. With their parents working long hours, Scarlet frequently had to be the caretaker for both of her sisters, and would always be looking out for them both. However, unbeknownst to Scarlet, Crimson would grow distant from her emotionally, as where Scarlet would succeed, Crimson would frequently struggle. Through comparisons made by the people around them, and the comparisons she made herself, Crimson struggled to keep up with Scarlet, but tried to not let it impact her regardless, even as Scarlet stopped pursuing her actual dreams and goals to be with her family, something that made Crimson feel like even more of a failure, someone who was simply weighing her sister down. This ends up culminating with Scarlet's act of treason, as, while stationed at a military outpost directly next to the exits to the surface, Crimson finds Scarlet feeding and helping the fugitive runaway, May. Crimson is outraged with Scarlet for her betrayal not just to the military, but to her personally, and when Scarlet refuses to let her take May in to be arrested, ends up physically attacking her in a fit of rage. Scarlet manages to free herself, but only after being severely wounded by the pocket knife Crimson had kept on her for self defense, and having to attack Crimson in self defense as well. Even years out from the incident, Scarlet still thinks about and deeply loves Crimson, and despite knowing she'll probably never see her again, desperately wishes she could. Crimson, on the other hand, is intensely enraged, having completely forsaken Scarlet as her sister, and is only hoping she'll come back for the sake of getting revenge for her betrayal
Youngest Sister
The youngest of the three sisters, Ruby is six years younger than Scarlet, and has always been the baby of the family to her. The two were also close growing up, though, as Scarlet's time in school increased, their time spent together decreased in turn, eventually culminating in Scarlet's military service taking her away from home entirely. With no service out in the outskirts where she was positioned, Scarlet was only able to keep in touch with Ruby via letters she'd write home, and ones that'd get delivered back from her. Even with that, they still considered each other pretty close, as they'd always been.
While Scarlet isn't sure how Ruby feels about her in the aftermath of her military desertion, she feels the same way about her as she does about Crimson, a deep sense of regret for leaving them behind, and of grief for knowing she'll probably never see them again. She wants nothing more than to know her baby sister grew up okay, and that she knows that her choice to leave was not out of a lack of love for her. Ruby, meanwhile, feels very bitter about everything. While it's her own actions that indirectly lead to Scarlet's desertion, she still feels that Scarlet betrayed and destroyed her family, and wants nothing more to do with her. Scarlet thinks about her daily, and misses her greatly
Close Friend
A close friend of Scarlet's in the current day, though they'd barely known each other prior. Being the childhood best friend of Ruby, May and Scarlet did know of each other, though not much deeper than just whatever Ruby would tell them of the other, and sparse interactions before Scarlet's military leave. It's these few interactions, however, that allows Scarlet to recognize May, who had now become a fugitive runaway aiming for the surface. Seeing her as a lost, scared teenager, Scarlet gave her mercy, not turning her in, and deciding she couldn't stand idly by while someone the age of her own little sister went hungry, bringing her military rations night after night to make sure both she and her little sister were fed. After Crimson discovered this treachery and attacked Scarlet, the two lost contact, with May running away the moment the fight broke out, and Scarlet being in too poor of condition afterwards to even consider tracking her. Instead, the two met again over a year later, both on the surface now, and by sheer coincidence, with May spotting Scarlet in an Inkopolis grocery store and the two being able to meet. Now both adults with somewhat stable lives, and also being the only two Octoling runaways they knew of, they kept in touch over the years, building a close mutual friendship with each other. While the Octolings returning to the surface has made it so they're not the only ones they know anymore, they still share that bond as past runaways who could only ever be open about that fact with each other

Notes
While red is typically used for lower ranked soldiers, she kept her colors as red even as an elite, wanting to be connected with her family in that way more than she did to show off her rank
