When Danny was 15, her older sister, Sabrina disappeared. Sabrina was loved by the community, and her disappearance affected her neighborhood deeply. Danny had always struggled with regulating her emotions, and although she had started to learn better coping skills, Sabrina's disappearance caused her to lose a lot of progress she had previously made.

She began to distance herself from her friends, often cutting them off entirely. She also began to lash out at those closest to her, especially her own mother. Mrs. Harris wants her and family to move on from Sabrina's disappearance, she loves her daughter deeply, but the grief has begun to tear her family apart. Danny sees her mother's attempts to get closure as her turning her back on Sabrina, causing the girl to resent her mother.

Things change for Danny after she encounters Dawnlight on her way home from school. When the hero confesses that she wants to retire, Danny jumps at the chance to take her place. Initally, the hero refuses, not wanting to give up her powers to a child she had just met. However, Dawnlight reconsiders when, during one her fights with the city's villain, Arachnis, Danny risks her life to protect a young boy who had gotten too close to the battle.

Dawnlight agrees to let the teen take her place, on the condition that she would become Danny's mentor. Danny agrees, not because she wants to protect the city, but because she believes her newfound powers may allow to her to finally find and rescue her sister.
