Pigeonkit was born in Shadeclan with his brother Pondkit. His mother died during childbirth. After his mothers death his father, Frogpounce, began to resent him and his brother. Pigeonwhisker's kit moons were realively normal. He and Pondkit were adopted by another nursing queen who had lost all but one of her kits. They were raised alongside their adopted sibling, Ashenkit. As an apprentice Pigeonpaw meets Newtpaw, an apprentice from Shineclan, Shadeclans rival clan.
After they become warriors, Pigeonwhisker and Newtbeam become mates, sneakinig away from camp to see one another. Pigeonwhiskers adopted brother is the only one that knows about Pigeonwhisker and Newtbeam's relationship. Ashensun keeps Pigeonwhiskers secret.
One newleaf evening, after many days of constant rain, Pigeonwhisker and Newtbeam meet at the border of their territories. They are both burried in a landslide. Shadeclan manages to dig an unconcious Pigeonwhisker out of the debris and save his life. The clan dosent know about the second cat in the landslide and Newtbeam dies burried in the rubble and earth.

When Pigeonwhisker wakes in the medden, everything around him looks fuzzy and offcolor. The clans medicine cat, Coyotebones, tells him that its due to his head injury. His back leg was also mangled in the accident. Coyotebones assures him that the leg will heal but they restrict him to camp for the time being.
The leader and deputy of Shadeclan come to the medden to speak with him, asking Coyotebones to leave them alone. They question him about what happened but he is still too far out of it to answer them propperly. Notcing their pushing, Ashensun arives and ushers the two of them out of the den and tells them to leave Pigeonwhisker alone. Ashensun offers to take Pigeonwhisker for some air outside camp and Pigeon graciously accepts. Once they are safely distanced from any prying ears, Ashensun asks him if he was with Newtbeam and tells him that the only cat they found in the rubble was Pigeonwhisker. Newtbeam was never dug out of the rocks. Pigeonwhisker breaks.
Pigeonwhisker dosent sleep, he barely eats, he refuses to groom or care for himself. He starts seeing things on the edge of his vission. Seeing- someone. Seeing Newtbeam. Then hes right in front of him, and hes talking. And Pigeonwhisker thinks he's totally lost it. He tries to get help from Coyotebones but the medicine cat just looks at him as if hes missing his head. Coyotebones tells the clans leader about what Pigeonwhisker said, bringing concers about starclan and the darkforst up. Pigeonwhisker continues to panic and telling Newtbeam to leave him alone. Spending time out of camp anxiously pacing and muttering things like "leave me alone" "i didnt kill you" "why wont you go away" "why is this happening". Whispers spread throughout the clan about him and he feels his clanmates eyes on him every second he's in camp.
Eventually he decides he cant take it anymore and Newtbeams not going anywhere. He cant keep dealing with the judegement of his clan. He tells Ashensun that he is going to leave and live in the abandoned twoleg nest outside the forest. Ashensun tries to talk him out of it but theres no point, Pigeonwhiskers mind is made up.

Pigeonwhiskers "hallucinations" turn out to be the ghost of Nettlebeam. He finds out that when he was crushed by the landslide, and he died for a bit, half of his spirit got trapped on the "other side" what many of the cats there refer to as "the fog". He can see into the fog, seeing the ghosts of any cats trapped there. Many of them are mangled and deforemed. Including Nettlebeam, whos body is mangled and crushed. His legs drag behind him. Half of his face is caved inwards and he is unable to speak so the two of them form a sort of signlanguage to communicate, mixed with drawing shapes, though Newtbeams sight seems to be majorly impared.
Descovering this is a nauseating discovery. The things Pigeonwhisker sees causes his horrific nightmares which leads to intense insomnia.
Pigeonwhisker and Ashensun visit each other whenever they can. But as time continues they meet less and less. But after a long time of Pigeonwhisker not showing up, Ashensun goes to the twoleg structure Pigeon has been living in and find that Pigeonwhisker is gaunt and malnurished. He comes to see Pigeonwhisker every day for almost a moon until Pigeonwhisker is healthy again.
Until Pigeonwhisker met another loner named Cicadasong. Cicadasong is a charasmatic tom that takes a liking to Pigeonwhisker. Pigeonwhisker eventually tries to explain to him that he can see the afterlife, but not starclan. He dosent expect Cicadasong to believe him but the brown tom believes him whole heartedly. The two get along well but Nettlebeam becomes angry and hostile.

Pigeonwhisker meets another loner named Cicadasong. Cicadasong is a former Shineclan cat. The two became close easily. Cicadasong had known Newtbeam and was shocked when Pigeonwhisker told him what had happened to the brown toms former clanmate. But Cicadasong was accepting of the news and was comforting and understanding towards Pigeonwhisker. Pigeonwhisker tells him about being able to see cats trapped between life and starclan, trapped in the fog. He expects Cicadasong to laugh, or insult him, or just get up and leave. But Cicadasong listens intently to the greay cat.
The two become inseperable and Pigeonwhisker moves to the farm Cicadasong lives on with two other barn cats, Pork and Beans. Over the next many moons, the two have lots of important conversations with lots of other cats and make it to a moonstone where the connection to starclan is the strongest. They manage to speak with starclan, where a cat he dosent know brings Nettlebeams spirit to starclan. Another starclan cat approaches, Pigeonwhisker barely recognizes the cat as himself. The ghostly Pigeonwhisker leans forward, touching its nose to his forehead and stepping forwards into him. When he opens his eyes, he no longer sees into the fog. His vision returns to normal for the first time in many seasons. Tears fall down his face and he sobs into Cicadasong's curly fur. They return home and find a home to the farm.
