Thrill of Distant Rain
committed | charismatic | courageous
"And no-one saw the carny go / And the weeks flew by / Until they moved on the show / Leaving his caravan behind"
Thrill of Distant Rain begins his story as a 23 year old bored tabaxi noble. Things change for Thrill however when he hears of a mysterious traveling circus in town: Mirzer’s Marvelous Mysteries. He is so fascinated by it that he decides to sneak out of his estate and go watch a show. He is so utterly captivated by the performances and the magic that he sees that he immediately decides he will run away from home to join it. Although he has always been a bit rash and impulsive, this is extreme even for him. He can’t help it, something about the circus draws him in.
He spends many years in the circus, so many that he loses count, and it is only when he almost dies in an accident caused by his performing partner, the great wizard Ulin, that he is expelled from the circus. Strangely, he cannot remember much about the circus, and comes to learn that 80 years have passed since the day he ran away from home. Confused and too ashamed to return home, he begins performing under his old stage name and tries to make do on his own so that he may one day return to Turenor and see what has become of his old home and family.

Thrill is a clever but shy creature who is content to listen more than he is to speak. When he does speak, he can come off as a bit pretentious, with a slight accent from growing up in Turenor. Furthermore, he is not too great with money, spending coin as if he is still in the halls of his estate despite being a poor adventurer. His tastes are expensive and he tends to turn his nose up (literally) at things like cheap alcohol and accomodations. This attitude did not make him any friends as he worked in the circus, and was part of the reason that the wizard Ulin greatly disliked him.

Eventual
Early Life
Thrill grew up incredibly sheltered and only learned vague things of the outside world through his studies. He spent a lot of time with his nose in his books and developed an affinity for history.
Adolescence
In his teen years he developed a fondness for the performing arts and despite being a wallflower, he pushed himself to learn how to perform. He spent a lot of time honing his singing and dancing skills, and his studies ceased to be the most important thing to him. This greatly frustrated his parents, who were establsihed scholars in their field and hoped that their son would take after them. A rift began to grow between Thrill and his parents as he stubbornly focused more on his love of the arts, almost out of spite.
Adulthood
In his early adulthood, Thrill had grown incredibly bored of his life. Performing was still something he greatly enjoyed, but the stifling influence of his parents had sucked much of the enjoyment out of what he had once passionately followed. It was perhaps this boredom and frustration that drew him to the mysterious circus in town. Although his focus was always more on theatrical performances, he always felt a rush of exhileration when he watched the trapeze artists perform tricks in the air, and after being in a rut for so long he wanted to go experience this Mirzer's Marvelous Mysteries. His parents forbade him of course, it was late, in a seedy part of town, and they were quite fed up with the performing arts. This didn't stop the stubborn Thrill though, and he snuck out, feeling almost compelled to by an invisible force. It was the first time in a while he had felt so passionate about the arts and he wanted to savor it.
The closer he got to this circus, the stronger this invisible force pulled at him until he wanted nothing more but to enter the gates adorned with the words Mirzer's Marvelous Mysteries>! He spent what felt like hours wandering the grounds, experiencing all the different attractions (although he pointedly chose to skip the Hall of Cursed Mirrors), until he found his way to the large tent in the middle of the circus. Giddy with excitement, he made his way to the surprisingly empty front row, and watched with delight as the lights dimmed and the show began. Although the many different performances captivated him greatly, what caught his attention most of all was, of course, the trapeze act. This act was different from the ones he had seen in the past, where skilled performers walked on tightropes and swung from platform to platform. This act did away with ropes entirely and relied solely on the skills of the performer, help up entirely by gusts of wind conjured up by the equally talented wizard on the ground.
Near the end of the performance Thrill had a thought. It was a small little thought at the bag of his mind, a small thought that slowly grew and pushed and pushed into the forefront of his mind until he could not ignore it any longer. "I never want to leave." This thought slowly consumed him through the end of the performance and on the way out of the tent and as he made his way to the gates once more he felt it so hard to resist just turning back. In the end, with nothing but the clothes on his back, he turned around and made his way back to the tent, looking fot the ringleader of the performance, the mysterious Mirzer. If someone were to ask Thrill now, or even then, what Mirzer looked like, Thrill could not answer, as his recollection of Mirzer's face was and continues to be a foggy mess of hues and scribbled out details. Nevertheless he spoke to this being and begged and begged to join the circus himself, until his voice was hoarse and his hands were shaking in anticipation. Looking back now, Thrill imagines that Mirzer reveled in that desperation, and after some consideration Thrill was allowed to stay. The circus packed up and left that same night.
Thrill spent much of his time cleaning the enclosures of the magical creatures at first. It was hard work, much harder than this pampered noble was used to, but he was dedicated. He did not make many friends, his high class demeanor putting off many of the residents in the circus. Things stayed much the same for a while, although Thrill could not really consider the time passing, and he began to grow strong and fit. Eventually he was promoted to mascot, and he donned a bright pink costume that, ironically, depicted a cat as well; a silly prank from the other members of the circus. Thrill did as many jobs as he possibly could, desperate to get recognition from Mirzer, and soon enough he was promoted once again. As the only Tabaxi in the circus as they traveled through Ghidra, Thrill was a novelty and soon enough became an attraction of his own. He started to be featured more in his own acts, most notably as the Strongman. Although Tabaxis were more known for their agility and grace, Thrill had spent enough time cleaning enclosures and doing other dirtywork that he had become incredibly strong, at least in comparison to other tabaxis around his build. Furthermore, it gave audiences a chance to get up close and personal with Thrill, and his solo act brought in many new visitors. It was still not enough for Thrill however, who had his eyes set on the trapeze act.
A death in the circus is what finally gave Thrill the chance he needed to follow his goal. One misstep during practice caused the trapeze artist to fall to their death and the wizard responsible was fired from the circus... at least that is what Thrill assumed happened. His slow climb to stardom, at least within the circus, had caught the eye of Mirzer, who had Thrill immediately replace the unfortunate trapeze artist, and he was assigned to work with the wizard known as Ulin. Thrill had crossed paths with Ulin in the past, and the two had quickly disliked each other. The ambitious wizard disliked Thrill's demeanor, and Thrill disliked Ulin's aggressive ambition and willingness to step on everyone to get on top. Despite their differences, the two made the act work, and Thrill's innate tabaxi skills helped him quickly grow competent in his craft. This was it: this was the culmination of all of the work that he had put into the circus, his natural skills, his newfound strength, his intimate knowledge of the performing arts; it was all coming together to make this the greatest performance of his life. And so it was, again and again, the act attracted people far and wide to see Thrill and Ulin's performance at Mirzer's Marvelous Mysteries. This act went on for what felt like years, perhaps it was years, and although the act always went off perfectly without a hitch, backstage there was always trouble. Ulin hated the focus on Thrill that seemed to permeate the circus. He had watched this spoiled tabaxi climb the ranks and become the face of the circus, and Ulin was envious.
The night started like any other as the performances ramped up in intensity to end in his and Ulin's performance... only this night would be different. This night, Ulin made changes to their act and chose to tell everyone but Thrill. Ulin later claimed his intent was to injure, not kill, but Thrill almost lost his life that night. If not for his quick thinking and tabaxi reflexes, he would have surely fallen to his death; instead he managed to latch onto the fabric of the tent and managed to slow his fall enough that he could land with minimal injury. He confronted Ulin after the show, angry that he had been sabotaged and the two of them were primed to fight. Others in the circus interfered however, and that would have been the end of it had Ulin not made a snide remark as Thrill moved to leave the tent. Thrill, ever hot tempered, dove towards Ulin and beat him heavily, receiving blasts of magic in return and exacerbating his injuries. It took several people to pull them apart and Thrill was then informed that Mirzer wanted to speak to him. Thrill, unsure of how Mirzer already knew of the dispute, headed to Mirzer's tent, and thus woke up on in the middle of a field.
Head throbbing, Thrill struggled to remember who or where he was, or how he ended up here. He vaguely remembered a circus, he remembered the names Mirzer and Ulin, but not much else. Slowly it came back to him, and he realized at once the gravity of what he had done: he had run away and joined a seedy circus and he wasn't sure why. He wandered the wilderness, hungry and dehydrated until he came by a nearby town where he was able to fish the small amount of coin he had left in his pocket to get some provisions. When asking people about a circus however, he was met with the same reponse, that there was in fact a circus in town but nobody really remembered anything about it. Despite Thrill having just performed here, it seemed that nobody knew who he was. As he prepared to make his way back towards Turenor, he heard a conversation in passing that made his blood run cold. The year was wrong, it had to be wrong, if not... that meant that Thrill had joined this circus eighty years ago. That had to be impossible, he hadn't aged at all and although time had sometimes felt like it was flying this had to be impossible. Asking people what year it was confirmed it though, he had been gone for eighty years. Suddenly he couldn't go back to Turenor. What happened to his estate, to his family? With no gold there was not much he could really do in order to gather that information. He didn't have any siblings... he didn't want to even face the possibility that his parents could be dead. Doing what he does best, he begain introducing himself to the townspeople as Sparkleclaw, a wandering performer. Smile plastered on his face, he did small acrobatic tricks and sang songs for next to nothing, and set off to larger cities in hopes of making more coin. About a month into his travels he discovers that the Radiance is a few days away, and makes towards Ignia in order to capitalize on that. Surely, this could be the first step towards rebuilding and finding out what happened to not only his family, but himself.
